Rice still better then ever at 40

SAN DIEGO -- The greatest football player ever to wear a helmet is sitting in his chair wearing a white sweat suit, a silver bracelet dangling from his right wrist, talking about the path it took for him to get to where he is today.

As he talks, his hands move. That isn't different than most, but what is different is how those hands look. You have to notice them. They scream for attention. The well-groomed, lithe-bodied player has hands with fingers that seem to point every way but the way they should.

They look worn and tired, the hands of a man who has used those fingers a lot, which indeed Jerry Rice has done over the years, more times in fact than any other receiver to play the game.

"It's just the ring finger," said Rice when asked about the hands as he grabbed that finger to show its odd shape. "I catch a lot of grief from my wife about it."
