Buffalo Bills coach Mike Mularkey resigned Thursday in a move that could be considered a huge aftershock to the earthquake that has shaken up the team's front office.
The move was a surprise because Bills owner Ralph C. Wilson Jr., eight days before, reaffirmed Mularkey's status as the head coach. That came the day Wilson announced the firing of team President and General Manager Tom Donahoe.
It also was a surprise because Mularkey is walking away from the final three years of a contract that was going to pay him about $1 million a year. Mularkey would have been paid the money if he had been fired. By resigning, he forfeits it. The Bills planned to make the announcement official at a news conference this morning. Neither the team nor Mularkey had any comment Thursday night. Sources within the team said the resignation came because Mularkey grew increasingly uncomfortable with his position and his ability to succeed within the Bills' new front-office structure.
