Former Raiders coach Art Shell hears the same question every year, usually about the time NFL teams start firing coaches and those coaches start lining up for a chance to be recycled.

Why hasn't he received a second chance to be a head coach in the NFL?
"Every year I say I don't know," Shell said from his office at NFL headquarters in New York, where he serves as the league's senior vice president of football operations and development.

"I'm not going to waste my time trying to figure it out. It is what it is. You move forward."

Only if Al Davis comes with him...

I was going to ask what he's been doing all these years since Al Davis fired him. The article answers the question. I wonder if he has actively pursued any openings or if he's just waiting for someone to call him.

Mike Sherman: 48-32

I'd say he deserves a shot.

Many head coaches who get fired start over as an assisstant. Did Art ever become an assistant, or did he just wait to be given a second head coaching job?
