The Buffalo Bills have been trying to replace Marv Levy as coach for seven seasons, so with the resignation of Mike Mularkey, Levy the general manager is leading the hunt for his own successful successor.

Levy came to Buffalo late in the 1986 season with long experience as a head coach at three different colleges and in the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs. The two most desirable candidates to fill the Mularkey vacancy, in this view, are Mike Sherman and Jim Haslett, the two most unfortunate victims of the great coaching purge of 2006. Their backgrounds bear some resemblance to Levy's.

It should be too, we need a coach who is a hardass.

I would take either of them, but my sentimental side wants Haz.

I don't want to see Haslet here at all. I think his attitude sucks.

I don't know Haslett too well, but isn't he kind of soft on the discipline side?

Not really a soft guy at all.. He had a bunch of knuckle heads in NO. Look for the whole climate in the locker room to change with Marv around as GM. His mere presence will give one bills drive a different feel. Postive thinking motivating players ...Can do attitude..Not the bunker or know it all donahoe philosophy of the past...

Great article - tough choice. IMO, these are the two best candidate at this time (maybe April deserves a shot, not sure). But from the pack of "experienced" HCs, this is the choice.

I guess I lean toward Haz, but only by an inch.

Is Buffalo a west coast offense kind of town?

Isn't Sherman from the Holmgren coaching tree that came from the Walsh tree?

I would take Sherman over Haslett any day of the week. Sherman is a proven winner. Haslett on the other hand is not. Don't any of you remember watching the Saint's fall apart half way thru the season not once but 3 times that he was head coach? You may think he is a hard ass but the Saint's were notorious for lack of discipline.

I don't know if it's discipline or just that his attitude sucks and the players tune into his attitude.

It was the Saints.

Trust me...he would do well here.

It seems that another good Bills columnist (Connor Byrne) has the same question

http://www.realfootball365.com/nfl/articles/mike-sherman-bills140106.php

IMO this aremy main reasons Sherman will not be the best fit:

1. It seems that Mike McCarthy is the real protagonist of Sherman's success. http://www.packers.com/news/stories/2006/01/12/2/
Recently he wisely has just parted ways with Jim Bates that was Packers real problem.
http://www.packers.com/news/releases/2006/01/16/3/
2. It's believed Sherman was paid between $2.5 and $3 million per season as HC and GM of the Packers... something that is arguably unreali$tic...
