Former Bills QB says he's free of cancer, will continue checkups
RUSTON, La. Joe Ferguson thought he had been involved in plenty of tough situations during his football career -- from Shreveport's Woodlawn High to the University of Arkansas to the N-F-L, where he was a star quarterback for the Buffalo Bills.
Then came the fight with cancer.
Ferguson says tests last June show he was clear of the cancer, although he will continue intermittent checkups at M-D Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
He said his fight against the disease put a new perspective on everything.
A third-round pick in 1973 out of Arkansas, Ferguson set several records during a 12-year career in Buffalo. He won nine games as a rookie, an N-F-L record that was broken in 2004 by Pittsburgh's Ben Roethlisberger, who went 13-and-0.
