One of the greatest NHL players in history is calling it a career.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have called a 2pm et press conference where Mario Lemieux (http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/player_bio.asp?player_id=4011) will announce his retirement.

Lemieux has been out of the lineup for over a month with an irregular heartbeat diagnosed as atrial fibrillation.

Lemieux first retired in 1997 following years of back pain, a rare bone infection and a bout with cancer, but unexpectedly came out of retirement five years.

It was a great career Mario!

Will he get the same treatment Gretzky did when he retired?
(not waiting 5 years to go into the hall & having his number retired league wide)

No. There is only one great one. Mario was a great player, but he also played for a great team. Send him to the hall, have Pitt retire his number, end of story.

Mario was in the same class talent wise but injuries and Cancer caused him to not quite get there. Pitt already has his # retired.

So was Cam Neely until Ulf Samuelson ruined that. Neely was beating both Gretzky and Lemeuix in points the year he was assaulted.

He's already in the Hall of Fame, and the waiting period was waived.

If he had been healthy his whole career, he would have broken Gretzky's records.

Mario was a great player, but he also played for a great team.

And Gretzky didn't? His team had four other HOFers on it (counting Messier, who will be). The Oilers in their prime were way better than the Pens ever were.

Part of being the greatest player is staying healthy.

Yeah, it's his fault he had cancer and a back infection.

It's what someone does on the ice that makes him great.
