Seems Bates is still possibly available.
Something happened on the way to Houston: Something weird happened in what was thought to be an easy hiring of Jim Bates with the Texans as defensive coordinator. Bates was the leading candidate, and the Texans were expected to pay the most money. Early Tuesday, his bid for the job on Gary Kubiak's staff appeared to be dead. Kubiak was leaning toward hiring Richard Smith from the Dolphins and add another coach to work with him. Bates is going to talk to Kubiak on Wednesday to see if there is still a chance he might end up as the Texans' defensive coordinator.
