View Full Version : Would you Move Up in Trade with NY?

It's looking like the Jets will be shopping for a new QB.. I'm sure they will be very interested in Jay Cutler, but not want to draft him as high as number four overall. This would mean they'd have to pay him on par the same money as Leinhart and Young are going to make. The Jets are already in salary cap hell.

On the other hand, Buffalo's top priority (better be) is the offensive line. D'Brickshaw Ferguson will be there at selection number four.

HOw about a trade that would involve Buffalo and New York? The Jets could still get Cutler at #8 and cheaper than at #4. Buffalo could land the franchise LT that they missed out on in 2002.

Do you pull the trigger on that trade? If so, what trade scenario would make sense for both teams involved? I'm not sure if I'm Buffalo I"d give up a first and a second to move up four spots.

The Bills can't afford moving up. Doing so would guarantee a loss of other draft picks. Besides, if both the Jets and Miami are interested in Cutler, I imagine he is going to go higher then previously expected.

The Jets will first "hope" for either Young or Lienart to be there when they pick. If not, that may force their hand and grab Cutler a lot higher then projected. Mort seems to think that Cutler will go in the top 10 as well.

This is only good for Buffalo. While teams that are higher in thedraft order are messing around with Young and Cutler, other more dominant players will be dropping to the Bills.

Stay where you are and let the candy come to you.

Ahh my friend their is a way IMO.

Swap #1's with the Jets, and give them the one of our 3rd rd picks and maybe a 5th rd this year if the wheel needs some grease..... AND a 2nd in 2007. The Jets will be interested in picks and will need them next year too. They have a rebuild project ahead, and might be very interested in a 2007 pick when their cap is in better shape.

We'd still have a 1st, 2nd and 3rd pick in 2006, and a great prospect for LT to pair up with Peters as our bookends for the next 5 - 7. I love the thought of the Brick eventually being our LT and Peters being our RT. To me that's a real good foundation to build the OL on.

To me its a deal that could be swung and work for both parties, but I'm sure there are good reason not to do the deal and we will hear about them.

Then how do you handle the obvious needs at DT? Not to mention the gaping hole we have at LG?

I have to disagree. This is way too much to give up for a rookie LT when what the Bills truly need is a Guard.

Too many holes on the roster to just give away draft picks.

there is no guarentee that brick will be there anyways..

i heard floyd reese on nfl channel on serius yesterday.. he spoke about the qb situation, and it is far from sure that 1) mcnair will be cut 2) volek is their back up who has shown he can start and just got a new contract that keeps him there for a while.

it is far from done that the titans take a qb... i think brick actually makes a lot more sense for them.

The Bills could get a starting LG in early round two of the draft... Or they could go after a starter in FA... Or, they could go after a center and move Preston to guard.

Sorry.. Forgot to Add.

UNDER this trade scenario, it would be
Round 1- Brick
Round 2- Guard, perhaps Spencer (from Pitt) would would VERY likely be there.
Round 3- DT (Keep Adams and have your new DT split time with Edwards)

I tend to agree with Daryl. Having Brick and Peters for 5-7 is a SOLID foundation for the line. There are 3-4 good guards who will go between late first-mid second. McNally will have better talent to teach than he's had before... Brick, Spencer, Preston, Villarrial, Peters has the makings of a good LONG term line (except for Villarriall who's getting old and will be replaced in 1-2 years.)

Now.. I would NOT give up a first and second straight up for the fourth pick. BUT, I would give up a first and third (since we have two) and maybe a fifth.

I tend to think the Jets would bite for 2 reasons.
1) They need picks, and many of them
3) they are HURTIN for cash. ESPECIALLY if they tag Abraham.... IF they decide they want Cutler, it would be CHEAPER for them to sign Cutler at #8 than at #4, and he'd still be there at #8.

Precisely. If the Bills were to trade up picks, I would hope it would be thier 2nd rounder for UGA OG Max Jean- Gilles in the bottom of the first. Although, Jean-Gilles has been moving down the draft ranks as of recently. If he doesn't have a noticable day at the combine he may just fall into the Bills lap.

giving up picks when we have so many holes better mean we were super active in FA..

Well we disagree about trading up for a tackle. No biggie.

Keep in mind that the Jets may just pull a fast one, grab Brick with their 1st, then grab QB Omar Jacobs with their 2nd.

Jacobs is highly underrated, IMO, and will make some team very happy they found him in the 2nd round.

Id rather sit tight and take Micheal Huff and then move up to the bottom of rd 1 to pick up Jean Giles.

1a. Huff
1b. Giles

Chris.
I totally agree with you there.. I dont see Brick getting past the Jets.. If they go QB, they might very well grab a veteran (on the level of a Holcomb) and develop Jacobs..

Or they might even tag Abraham and then try to trade him to a team for a long-term starting QB (Phillip Rivers)

Pennington is done in NY, but that doesnt equate to Jets taking Cutler, especially when they have SO many other problems.

I either stand pat or trade down for more picks.

No way that I deal our pick to the Jets .

1) Division rival- let the Jets overpay for Cutler if they want him so bad. It hurts their ability to compete. Plus- why strengthen their hand with additional picks?

2) We have a lot of holes to fill and there will still be plenty of guys for us to select at #8 to fill those holes. Who's to say the guy we get at #4 won't be there at #8 anyway? Especially if some team is stupid enough to take Cutler in the top 10?

3) Before anyone starts tossing out "Trade up" or "Trade down" scenarios- remeber 2 things

a- realism. The following chart is what GMs use to determine how much picks are worth. No one is going to swap places with you for an insignificant pick, and/or cap busting players you consider garbage anyway. (IE- "give 'em Mike Williams") It would take the Bills #1 & #2 , or their #1 and a couple of later picks to pull the deal. We aren't in the position to do so.

b- It does take two willing teams to tango. Tossing out "Let's trade down" sounds like a great idea- until no one is willing to do it.

According to this chart, the first overall pick is worth 3,000 points and the fourth overall pick is worth 1,800. The third-round pick the Chargers got, which they used on Nate Kaeding (http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/492980), was the No. 65 pick overall, worth 265 points. The first rounder they got from the Giants this year is No. 12 overall, worth 1,200 points, and the fifth rounder was 144th overall (San Diego traded it to Tampa Bay). That was worth 34 points.
Do the math, and for the 3,000 point pick the Giants got, they gave up picks totaling 3,299 points. That's not bad considering they unloaded two first-round picks plus two more picks for Manning's services.
Here's another example: In 2003, the Bears dealt the No. 4 overall pick to the Jets for their pair of first-round picks, Nos. 14 and 22. According to the chart, the Bears gave up a pick worth 1,800 for picks totaling 1,880. That's about as close to even as can be. The Bears used the picks on DE Michael Haynes (http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/396161) and QB Rex Grossman (http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/396159) while the Jets took DT Dewayne Robertson (http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/396175).

In the words of American Idol Judge Randy Jackson....You the man dog ....

I HAVE BEEN SCRATCHING MY HEAD EVERYTIME A ZONER CAME UP WITH A CRAZY TRADE PICKS POST.

I remember jimmy johnson coming up with a system of value per pick...that he used in dallas.. I hope this post puts a end to all the crazy trade pick post that some zoners come up with......... though i doubt it ..

So if denver was willing they get #8 for their 22 and 29 in rd one and we also get their get 4th rd pick #29....and they get our 3rd in 2007... or 5th 2006

Dozer, from your chart we should get both of Denvers picks for our 8th. But reality says it won't happen. We would have to throw someone like Moulds in there to get them both.

Brick is the real deal. If all it cost was a 2nd we'd be foolish not to do it. A guy like that that can protect the QB's blindside for the next dozen years is worth a lot. Gandy is ok but Brick is going to be dominant.

I would definitely make the trade if possible, but I wouldn't overpay. I think swapping 1sts, a 3rd and maybe a 5th also and that's it. No 2nd next year also. That being said, I take a top G in the 2nd unless Gabe
Watson is available (doubtful) and with our second 3rd rd pick, I take a safety instead of DT. I handle DT in FA this year instead and obtain some good FAs that will stop the run - even if they are aging. I make DT a priority in next year's draft.

If we obtain Brick, between him and Peters, are Tackle positions are covered for the next 10 years!!!

I wouldn't trade up. If there are no players who represent a good value at at least something of a need position, I'd be inclined to try and move down, but I'm not giving up draft choices this year if I'm Marv Levy.

Wouldn't this be like trading in our own division like we did with the Patidiots to get Bledsoe. You don't trade in your own division.

Dozer,

I totally agree. Bills have a lot of holes to fill and it doesn't make any sense to gamble (trade up or trade down) again. We have a top 8 draft pick/round and we can only expect possitive things if the F.O. stays firm and cool.

In other words, Bills are in a very enviable draft situation and it doesn't make any sense to change direction.
