Draft boards could change a bit thanks to Drew Brees

    Found this on KFFL.com:

Chargers | Brees might hit free agent market
    Sat, 18 Feb 2006 09:31:20 -0800

Kevin Acee, of the San Diego Union-Tribune, reports San Diego Chargers QB Drew Brees might be allowed to test the free agent market if the team is unable to sign him to a long-term contract. When asked how the team would respond if he wasn't signed by Thursday, Feb. 23, General manager A.J. Smith said, "I think, looking at it, (the team would say) 'Well, it didn't work out.'" Smith also ruled out using the franchise tag on Brees.

Chargers | Team will not tag Brees

Friday evening, Feb. 17, it was reported the San Diego Chargers could not use the transition tag on QB Drew Brees. ESPN.com's John Clayton reports the Chargers will not use the franchise tag on Brees either. That leaves them only two options: signing him to a new contract or letting him hit the free agent market. In the meantime, negotiations between Brees and the Chargers have continued all week. If Brees isn't signed to a new contract by March 3, he will be an unrestricted free agent.

Chargers | Team unable to place transition tag on Brees
    Fri, 17 Feb 2006 19:49:06 -0800

Adam Schefter, of the NFL Network, reports the San Diego Chargers are unable to use the transition tag on QB Drew Brees due to a clause in the collective bargaining agreement. Article 20, section 14 of the CBA states that the team must match the terms of Brees' contract from last year. The clause means the team must either use the franchise tag on Brees, sign him to a long-term contract, or let him test the free agent market. The team would have to pay Brees $9.7 million in guaranteed money for 2006 if they use the franchise tag on him.
