There seems to be a direct corollation between the head coach's personality and his success in winning a championship-

So let's playthis game-

Post a coach (current or past) and see if we can find one that breaks the mold-

Bill Parcells- The Ultimate Bastard- 2 rings, 3 SB appearances

Dozerdog
01-28-2003, 04:21 PM
Marv Levy- Nice Guy

very successful regular seasons- 4 times the Bride's maid

Ewebank was a Bastard- Read "Fatso" by Art Donovan- Ewebank coached the Colts in the 50's- he was a tough guy

Bill Walsh- a closet Bastard- He's been meddling behind the scenes and got Mooch eventually fired. Got Siefert out too.

Two guys already said Joe Gibbs. Another Dick Vermeil, a crybaby but not a bastard. Tom Flores, Tom Landry, and someone here is taking Art Donovan's word that Webe was a jerk?

Gibbs I have always admired. A truly under rated head coach. Funny how none of the head coaches that beat Marv are in the Hall of Fame.

No one here said anything about Weeb Ewebank being a jerk. Art Donovan loves the guy. Have you read the book "Fatso"? It's full of great football history, really funny stories,

The point of the thread is do coaches who are tough on their players (Bastards) more successful than coaches who were known to be nice guys?

I haven't seen Dan Reeves mentioned yet. He was a hell of a nice guy. If he got angry, then perhaps his team(s) would have responded better.

john madden-nice guy or bastard?

the players loved him but he stormed the sidelines like a raving lunatic and give the refs hell.

So far, only Gibbs and Vermiel are the Nice Guys who won championships, and it took Vermiel forever.

I'n not sold on Landry being a nice guy- Mike DeOssie, ex-Giants and Patriots Linebacker- does a sports radio show in Boston. He started his career in Dallas under Landry.

He loves and respects the guy- but definatly would not categorize him as 'Mr Nice Guy"

Actually from what is said around the Pits at the races these days Gibbs is a Bastard. Just doesn't show it to the media. I know it is a different sport but I believe he coached the same way he runs his race team.

Paul Bear Bryant--middle names says it all--Bastard.

Historian

...from the old Historian's archives...

Don McCafferty, Baltimore Colts. Nice guy. Took over Shulas team that lost SB III, and led them to a 11-2-1 record in 1969, and a 10-4 record with a SB victory in 1970 over the Cowpukes.

Died of a heart attack six months later.

I figured- There can be "Closet" Bastards- Walsh was one of those- looked like a sweet old man on the outside- but a tough guy in practice.

Then there are the guys who are "Closet" nice guys. Jim Fassel comes to mind. When his team starts losing and is 5-5 at mid season, he usually puts on a tough guy act in the press conferences. The team responds, but inthe playoffs his Nice Guy comes through and they dissapoint.

A Bastard would never let his team blow a 24 point lead

How about guys who are neither bastards or nice guys....just dumb.

GW, Kay Stephenson, Hank Bullough, and Harvey Johnson come to mind.

Don't forget that not all bastards win, like Forrest Gregg and Gunther Cunningham.

Plenty of losing Bastards out there, Buddy Ryan comes to mind.

But I guess I was looking for that dynasty building nice guy.

Actually, I loved him when he was defensive coordinator of the Bears. but he sucked as a head coach because he didn't understand how to run both sides of the ball.

George Allen: combo

have you guys and girls seen "Hail to the Redskins" on ESPN ? I saw it today. It follows the Redskins for a season back when Allen was the coach. The NFL Films guys wanted to follow a rookie through the whole process of getting equipment/practice/evaluation/making the team.

The only problem is coach Allen rarely had any rookies make the team. He either cut or traded them.

His philosophy was let someone else teach them, we don't have time for that. If they make it in the leauge we can look at them later.

He had an old fellow (retired security man) who ran people away from practices. This guy was on a bycycle :D Allen always figured spys were there. Meanwhile he had people spying on everyone else :D

Peanut butter and jelly sandwhiches everyday for lunch with milk. Never anything else.

Much more stuff to see , very entertaining show. It was found at NFL films supposedly about a year ago after being shelved after it was made.

I disagree with you about Tom Landry, Dozer. I don't think he's a bastard at all! Maybe he was strict in his discipline with his team, but I don't think he was a bastard. I think he was one of the best, if not the best head coaches in the NFL. He had class and dignity. He was definitely my favorite coach. :) God rest his soul.

Alright, aside from being dumb (although you all must admit, he's getting smarter), where would you guys put Gregg Williams on the Bastard-Nice Guy Spectrum?

The_Philster

With Bastard being on high end of the scale from 1-10, I'd say an 8.5
