The Bills have released offensive lineman Mike Williams. “We are announcing today that we have released Mike Williams,” Bills general manager Marv Levy said. “We appreciate his efforts and wish him well in what lies ahead in his career.” Williams was selected by the Bills with the fourth overall pick in the 2002 Draft and was Buffalo's highest draft pick since Bruce Smith (#1 overall in 1985).

If McNally thought there was something inside of Williams that he could tap into I'm sure he would've been for keeping him... Pretty sad when someone known for pulling talent out of a rock doesn't want ya...

I disagree. It just means that we don't want him for the money he was due and he wouldn't take a big enough pay cut.

IMO, Jason Peters should be our LT. I think Mike Gandy would be a very solid RT. He'd be good next to Chris Villarrial.

Who buys an O-lineman jersey anyway? Id get a punter or kicker jersey over an O-lineman. It would have to be god on our O-linefor me to buy a jersey, and even then I'd debate the pros and cons of hell. I thought Williams was willing to restructure his contract? Did he not get the chance? Or did the Bills just not care anyway? He wasnt worth his paycheck that for damn sure. He sat out so many games, and sucked ass when he was actually able to play. Good riddence.

I'm hoping we cut Moulds next. With the uncertainty of the NFL labor contract renogotiating Moulds is stupid. Believe it or not I think we are better off keeping Reed. It makes more sense.

Please save your emotional response and give me a valid financial reason why keeping him makes any sense.

Cutting Williams+ Moulds = 11 milion dollars in free agency!! Bring Hutch to Buffalo and let's run the ball.

Wow. I just got home and read this. Well, as much as I still think Dick is going to be a bust, at least Marv is making the right calls with the dead wood. MW was the #1 problem for this team after TD and MM.

Too fat.

Too expensive.

Too useless.

Good job Marv.

part of me is real sad he is going.. not because i want to keep him, but because i hate to see us waste such a huge pick.. when you pick number 4, that player needs to be a guy that is around for 10 years..

the silver lining is that we got peters for next to nothing and he is playing like williams should have played all along.

peters was a TD find too, btw.

I agree Tat.

Even though this wasn't completely unexpected, it's still a pretty bold move on the part of ML and DJ, with a year left on his contract.

What they're saying, by releasing him as opposed to renegotiating/extending his contract, is that they feel he has no chance to improve.

That's saying a lot considering he was taken at #4. It also says a lot about how bad TD's talent evaluation was.

The fish will pick him up...they love sifting through our garbage.

I disagree. It just means that we don't want him for the money he was due and he wouldn't take a big enough pay cut....

I'm surprised that, especially after last season, Williams didn't do whatever it would take to restructure his contract to a point where the Bills would keep him. I had read articles that said he was willing to switch to guard and restructure his contract accordingly, but I guess he didn't. If that's why the Bills let him go, that was a very stupid move on his part IMHO, because he's going to have a hard time convincing teams that he's worth more than he might have gotten from the Bills based on his performance the last couple of years and his injury history. If he thinks he can get even decent OT money, I think he will find that he is sorely mistaken.

Or, perhaps it was a case where he simply didn't do enough to convince Marv and DJ that would make a determined effort to come into camp and win a starting OG job. If that was the case, that's sad...and not a very smart move on his part, either. He had to know that with his big salary cap number the new regime in Buffalo would be closely scrutinizing him and that he would have to show a desire to stay and win an OG job if they were going to keep him and that it would be in his best financial interests to stay with the Bills at this point.

The only reason that I would consider acceptable for Williams' failure to convince the team to keep him would be if he and/or the Bills' medical staff had concluded that his back injury was serious enough that he would never fully recover or would there would be such a big risk of him reinjuring himself that he would not be worth the risk of keeping. Now, given the nature of back injuries, it is possible that that might be the case, but, if it were, I would have expected the statement from the team announcing his release to be a little different--it didn't sound like his injury played any role in their decision, more like they were saying, "Thanks Mike, don't let the door hit you on the ass on the way out!" The announcement that they made was so short and terse that it sounded like they were not happy with him at all and were glad to be getting rid of him and not like his injury was a factor at all.

If Peters continues to progress as an OT, it will pretty much be a wash, but, you are right, T: a team that picks a player that high really needs to have that guy be a really solid player or better for 10 years to be successful. Champions are built on solid picks at the top of the draft, plus the addition of guys, like Peters, who who are obtained late in the draft or as UDFAs or off of waivers or as free agents from other teams. Even if a team finds a guy like Peters, when it loses a high draft pick like Williams, it is really just treading water instead of getting better. Peters off-sets the failure of Williams, but that's all. It's better than if the Bills hadn't found Peters, but it should have added more to the team and put it closer to being a serious contender. Thanks to Williams, it didn't.

You guys are too young to remember the likes of Richie Lucas and Walt Patulski.

Thanks, Jan, for reminding some of the guys who haven't been around that long about some of the other big busts that the Bills have had along the way--the list is so long that I'm having a hard time trying to figure out just where on that list Williams fits. Tom Cousineau's name keeps coming to mind along with Patulski's and Al Cowlings (Cowlings because he really didn't want to be in Buffalo and kept trying to influence OJ and some of the other guys in the lockerroom to quit on the team like he did, potentially doing more damage to the team than simply being a bust himself).

When you cut the #4 overall pick from 4 years ago teams usually are going to suck. You build through the draft and the Bills draft under the TD era was mediocre at best.
I sometime wonder what the team would of looked like if the Bills still had Polian or if they hired AJ Smith after Butler was fired instead of TD. I know Smith was a Butler disciple however he has a great football mind.
