Let me introduce you to S Pat Watkins, Fla St

Many of us feel a S is a need on this team (including me). Many of those people feel we need 2, not one. I tend to say, lets get one this year, one the next to keep things a bit more stable.

Now, theres 2 guys that will be at 8, and are S and look to be worthy of a top 10 pick. Note that I said top 10, not top 8. I still think that based just on a players ranking, Vernon Davis jumped above both Mike Huff and Jimmy Williams.

But, if you wanted to get a guy later that can play right away let me introduce you to S Pat Watkins from Fla St.

    CDS Profile

Pat Watkins is a lanky safety that has a body perfectly suited for today's super receivers. At 6'4" the first thing you notice about Watkins is his tremendous size and then when you see how fast he can run and move you start to see NFL scouts drool. Watkins is a tremendous force in the passing game with his body and athletic ability as well as his ability to read a QB and put himself in position to make a play. Can stick with pretty much any receiver in college football which is rare for a safety. He does have some difficulty with smurf type receivers but deals with them much better than any safety with his size. Not a huge threat in the run game but is suitable. He is the perfect compliment to a Rodney Harrison type safety. NFL teams will probably want him to play around 215 and he can easily get to that weight by draft time. Due to his ability to excel in the passing game he will most likely play free safety in the NFL and should be one of the first safeties off the board in the 2006 NFL Draft.

    Invited to the combine.

Now, he just ran a 4.42, NOT a 4.50 at the combine. At, 6' 4" and 205 hes a very tall and decent built guy for the FS spot. I like this kid alot.

I watched him in several games. He is a ballhawking DB type who flat out makes big plays and can matchup against anyone based on sioze and now most based on speed. Hes a great prospect for one of our 2 3rd rounders who could start day one in place of Vincent but may not be big strout enough to start in place of Milloy.

Hes a prospect to watch for sure!

Maybe with one of our 3rd rounders he'd be a nice pickup.

If we don't draft a FS i hoep Rashad Baker gets a fair chance to beat out sorry-ass Vincent.

Me too. But then I started wondering if Strong Safety was a bigger need...

Safety is definitely a need. Baker and Greer have shown some promise but I still don't think they're ready for starting duty (and they may never be). Vincent and Milloy are both older than dirt and won't be effective for much longer.

This would be a good pickup, but DT and OT better be addressed first.
