The Carolina Panthers have made their first move to get under the salary cap, releasing veteran defensive tackle Brentson Buckner.
According to sources with knowledge of the situation, Buckner was informed of his release Wednesday morning.
The move clears his $1.85 million base salary off the books, but the Panthers still have moves to make. They'll need to clear between $8 million and $10 million off their salary cap to fit under the anticipated limit of $95 million. Of course, that assumes there's no extension to the collective bargaining agreement before the start of the league year Friday.
Later in the day, the Panthers cut Stephen Davis and Rod Smart.
