NOTE: New provision with respect to June 1st rule. Teams can now designate two veteran players that can be released prior to June 1st but still be able to split remaining proration between two seasons BUT this designation requires the team to continue to carry that players CAP HIT until June 1st. This allows the veteran a better chance to take advantage of FA period when teams have more cap space to play with.

Before the start of the league year, a team can designate two players who will be destined for June 1 releases to spread out remaining signing bonus acceleration into the next year. To do this, teams must carry those players' cap numbers until June 1, but release them before March so they can hit free agency. After June 1, the team gets to remove the salary and take the remaining cap hit in the following year. For example, if a player has $4 million of remaining signing bonus and four years left on his contract, he can be released before March and be a free agent. After June, the team would have only the $1 million of proration on its cap that year and let $3 million be applied to the following year's cap.

There is no apparent advantage to the team only the player

Why would the owners agree to this??

Maybe the Bills could take the reporting and workout bonuses as cap savings???

What is the exact number we would retain by letting him go?

If he release him as described above...Bills save $2,766,666 now and another $6,089,000 after June 1st.....BUT the total difference between old and new is $7.189 million because of the 2007 proration does not fall onto 2006 cap....

if Bills just decide to use the old rule.....Bills save $5.5 million as described previously

If we release Molds, we should more then likely sign another vet WR... we may save a small amount, but when the two are balanced, will it not be a wash in terms of cap hit?

Not likely that a new WR would cost more than the cap savings ....we could also sign a player that is younger and fits new OC's system...
