Bills | Team will pursue Pickett
Fri, 10 Mar 2006 20:05:28 -0800

Jim Thomas, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports the Buffalo Bills are expected to pursue free agent DT Ryan Pickett (Rams).

Not surprising, but they may want to move fast!

Draftboy, Spaz & myself should be handling free agency for the Bills! We'd have a darn good start to it by now! Come on Marv & Ralph, we're already 20 minutes into this thing, what is taking you guys so long! J/K

Nope take a look at the stats in comparison to Adams and Williams in the past few years, they are comparable and in some aspects better.

hmmm...... I guess they havent really had the best LB corps behind them either to help them out.

Not sold on Lewis.. But from what I hear all around with Pickett that may be a good move..

and Maybe they knew he'd come here and thats why they released Adams?

Here lemme help ya out, I posted this earlier in another thread;

Sam Adams;
04-26tck 5 sacks
05-15tck 3 sacks

Pat Williams;
04-37tck 2.5 sacks
05-41tck 1.5 sacks

Ron Edwards;
04-13tck 4 sacks
05-4tck 0 sacks <---IR

Damione Lewis;
04-26tck 5 sacks
05-27tck 1 sack

Ryan Pickett;
04-41tck 2 sacks
05-47tck 2 sacks

Little bit of math;

Pat Williams + Sam Adams=
2004-63 tackles and 7.5 sacks
2005-56 tackles and 4.5 sacks

Damione Lewis + Ryan Pickett=
2004-67 tackles and 7 sacks
2005-74 tackles and 3 sacks

Agreed...both are very good young players. I'd be very happy if the Bills pulled that off.

What exactly about Lewis are you not sold on? He has shown the ability to collapse the pocket and teamed with Pickett they have outproduced Adams and Pat the past two seasons.

Yes stats arent everything but there have been no off the field issue no crazy contract hold outs and the rest is all based off opinion.

They just arent what I would call "dominating"

If both of them were to come to the Bills, it would be a huge upgrade from what they had last year. 2 very athletic DT's, who fit in perfectly with the defense we're going to run. It makes perfect sense!

If I had the time Id post the top 10 DT's in your opinion stats from the past two seasons for a comparison. Im not sure what the results may be but I think/hope it would be comparable.

Its not about stats. Im well aware that DL is not a glory position where stats run wild. From the games I have seen them play they didnt look like they were all that dominating.

DT is not a dominating posistion in itself its like an OG on offense. The stats arent going to show it and the games arent going to show it. STL D sucked last year but these two produced. They had no DE help, no LB help and no DB help. I dont what I can tell you or show you to try and convince you except to say they cant be any worse than Tim Anderson?

No DE help? Leonard Little is a top tier DE. LB, Claiborne and Coakly (most of the year)

But you are right. Cant be any worse than what we have now. I just dont want us to go off and give them some huge contract.

if you consider outplaying pat williams and sam adams, and not getting as many snaps to do it, sucking.. then yeah.. they have sucked so far.

In that case nobody. Let me start over. I dont mind us bringing them in I just dont want to spend too much on guys who have been nothing short of first round busts.

You're not going to see them dominate like you think. They are both one-gap tackles. They both are responsible for hitting their assigned gap with two responsibilities. 1. If run, stop the back from coming down their gap. 2. If pass, take their gap straight to the QB.

It's a disciplined position , which takes away their ability to become 'playmakers'. Not like a Sam Adams or Pat Williams playing a two-gap style that reacts to what the offense is doing. In fact that makes their numbers a little more impressive if you think about it.
