Bears | Team scheduled to meet with Archuleta

Adam Schefter, of the <A href="http://www.kffl.com/team/77/nfl">NFL Network, reports the Chicago Bears (http://www.kffl.com/team/11/nfl) are scheduled to meet with free agent S Adam Archuleta (http://www.kffl.com/player/1772/nfl) (Rams) Monday, March 13.

Given that McCree is gone, I'd like to have Arch in Buffalo.. BUt I really have a feeling that with a deep safety pool this is going to be a position taken care of in the draft either with Huff in round one or Bullocks in round two.. Plus a few safeties might slide down into the second round (Bing, Watkins)

On the other hand you must've had gotten "lucky" in the past to have those kids.

Your luck just ran out.

Tatonka:

In my ideal world, we will sign a second quality DT in FA this week, so we don't have to worry about Ngata or Bunkley... And in the draft I'd go Huff as the SS in round one and charles spencer as the left guard in round two..

Mr. Miyagi

I'll still want an OT in the FA.

Huff for SS.

There are several issues to consider if Bills want Archuleta:
1) Is he a player on the rise?
2) Does he represent an unquestionable upgrade over Lawyer Milloy?
3) Does he represent a speedy and punishment kind of threat if you compare him to Huff?
4) Aren't Bills overpaying on secondary?

Archuleta is not a coverage Safety. He is an in the box tackling safety. If we are running a Cover 2, then we need versatile safeties who are fast, can cover well, and tackle. Chris Hope would be a better fit. He had 96 tackles and 3 ints from the FS spot last year, which means he can cover and tackle.

Here are the FA write ups from ESPN on both players:

Chris Hope:

Good range, was asked to cover a lot of ground when Pittsburgh played Cover 3 in most long-yardage passing situations and is a sure tackler. Teams are more split on him, though, and Pittsburgh hasn't tried very hard to retain him.

Adam Archuleta:

Big hitter who has averaged 77.4 tackles for his career, but will whiff on some tackles and too often takes bad angles. Has five times as many sacks as interceptions (15-3) and has to play in a scheme that gets him close to the line of scrimmage to be most effective.

If we sign him I will take back everything I said about Marv being a bad GM so far.

bing will be just as good if not better.. i see huff and bing much like roy williams and ed reed were a few years ago.

Tatonka,

Unfortunately for us, this FA is extremely poor at Safety and loaded by DTs, LBs and TEs.
IMO it's wise start thinking that Huff is our future...

It seems to me like Tank fell off the radar after last year. He didnt do anything outstanding.

I'm fairly certain that Marv would not have cut Milloy without some plan. We'll just have to sit back and be patient to see what that plan is.

I don't believe that Archuletta is the answer for this defense. Like it's been stated in earlier posts, he's not a great cover guy.

Good point. Maybe Marv thinks that Wire is the answer?

Ah got you. There are too many damn Williams' lol. I think we have a fat chance at getting either of the three on your list although it makes me salivate just thinking about us drafting either of the three.

As I've said before, I doubt that the Bills will be that interested in Archuleta or Williams because both are more "in-the-box" safeties than the type of cover safety that is needed in the Cover 2.

Also, there is no reason for the Bills to draft Huff at # 8 if they can fill other needs or get a big-time player, like Mario Williams, there because this is a deep draft at safety.

In addition to Huff, you have:

Jimmy Williams--probably gone in Round 1
Ko Simpson--probably gone in Round 1
Darnell Bing
Daniel Bullocks } 2 of these three will probably go in Round 2, one may drop
Dante Whitner into Round 3--the Bills interviewed Whitner at the Combine

These others are all likely to go after the Bills pick in Round 3:
Bernard Pollard--big and very fast
Calvin Lowry--also very fast
Dewan Landry
Charlie Pepprah--not as big or as fast, but a play-maker for a good Alabama D
Greg Blue--more of an "in-the-box" guy but a play-maker for Georgia
Jameel Addae--had a huge Senior Bowl game

While Huff has gotten a lot of press and may live up to it, there are enough good safeties in this draft that the Bills could pick up a pretty good one in the 3rd round who would still be good enough to step in and start as a rookie.

Also, don't write off the possibility that the Bills could still pick up a safety in free agency: Oliver Celestin, who started for the Jets until he was injured and lost his job to rookie K.Rhodes last season, is available and is the kind of not-well-known young veteran who has shown starting ability that M.Levy is likely to take a look at--Celestin was considered an up-and-coming player by the Jets, but they couldn't keep K.Rhodes off of the field and opted for him over Celestin because they couldn't play both together.
