Bills | Team agrees to terms with Nall
Sun, 19 Mar 2006 21:53:43 -0800
Tom Silverstein (http://www.kffl.com/link/187), of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (http://www.kffl.com/link/188), reports the Buffalo Bills (http://www.kffl.com/team/9/nfl) have agreed to terms with free agent QB Craig Nall (http://www.kffl.com/player/5701/nfl) (Packers) on a three-year contract. Financial terms were not released. In Buffalo, Nall will be behind QB J.P. Losman (http://www.kffl.com/player/9412/nfl), who was supposed to be the team's franchise quarterback, and QB Kelly Holcomb (http://www.kffl.com/player/462/nfl). However, it's thought the Bills (http://www.kffl.com/team/9/nfl) could part with one of the two quarterbacks and Nall will have a chance to fight for the starting job this summer.

Oh great, a younger version of holy holcomb. What a waste of money.

maybe the plan is to replace holcomb with someone of lesser experience to take some of the pressure off JP? that could make this a good move, perhaps.

after thinking about that for a minute or two, i'm not sure it would be such a great idea to go into the year with losman, nall, and "?" at QB.

If this signing is confirmed, it fits the profile of the kind of QB that M.Levy said he was going to try to bring in and the type of player that he is obviously looking for in free agency.

Marv said that he was going to bring in a young, veteran QB with potential to compete for the starting QB job. Nall who has NFLE experience and some experience backing up B.Favre and was considered as a possible successor to Favre before the Pack drafted Aaron Rodgers fits that profile.

Moreover, Nall is the kind of player that anyone who read Marv's book would have to expect Levy to be interested in as a free agent: the younger, more or less obscure player who has had some time to develop who appears to be on the verge of breaking out. If you read Marv's book, you cannot help but be struck by how much he talks about these types of players (Diron Talbert, Jeff Wright, Steve Tasker, et al) and how valuable they are to the composition of a winning team. Tripplett, Royal, Bowen, Nall, Wells, Idonjie and even Davis all fit that same pattern, as do some of the players the Bills had in who signed elsewhere, like Pickett, or have not made up their minds yet, like Lennon and Neal, etc.

Like it or not, these are the kinds of players that Bills fans should expect Marv to look at first to build the foundation of the team around. The team already has some high-profile players, like Clements, McGee, Fletcher, Spikes, McGahee, Evans and, yes, for as long a he remains a Bill, Moulds and will add a couple of others in the up-coming draft. And, Marv is going to try to fill in around those players with the kind of "no-name" young veterans that he indicated in his book that he sees as being keys to building a winning team.

It doesn't matter what Marv and DJ say to the press or to the team--as Herm Edwards so eloquently told the NYC area press when it was obvious that his team had suffered so many injuries that it had no chance to win, "It doesn't matter what the situation is, you don't play the games to lose! You always play to win!"--it is going to take at least another year to turn this team around and put it in a position to be a winning team. Of course they are going to try to "win now"--what do you expect them to say to not just the fans, but, more importantly, to the players on the team? They are not going to say, "Well, we're really not good enough to compete for a playoff berth this season, so it doesn't matter if we win or not...." They're never going to say that! Naturally, they are going to tell the players that they want to win and that they are good enough to win, etc., so that they will play as hard as they can and try to win as much as they can. But, the reality is that, unless they get very lucky, it is going to take a couple of off-seasons (this being the first) for them to put together a team capable of being a consistent winner. And, what they are trying to do at this point is build the foundation of that team with the kind of players that fit into a certain mold.

Whether Nall can actually beat out JP or Holcomb and be a good NFL starting QB or any of Levy's other FA signings this offseason can emerge as solid starters in the NFL remains to be seen. What is obvious, though, is that Levy and DJ are approaching free agency with a definite, discernable philosophy in mind. Now, you can disagree with that philosophy or not as you wish, but, like it or not, that is the approach that they are taking and anyone who read Levy's book should not be surprised by the fact that it is.

Great post! and I can't argue with it at all, however I think before FA this was a solid approach to developing a great team, as evidence of our 4 SB's. However I think this philosophy is no longer a valid appraoch because by the time you get this player developed his contract is up and away he goes to be productive for another team.

State in time for 2001 spring practice...Demonstrated poise this past Sept. 22 in an NSU game at Texas Christian; led Demons on two late scoring drives, one to tie the game with 50 seconds left, and another to win it in overtime, earning NCAA Division I-AA Player of the Week...In final collegiate game, at Montana in 2001 NCAA playoffs, passed for 339 yards, in minus-20 wind chill...Teammate of current Packer Rondell Mealey at LSU...Joins Packers' Keith Thibodeaux as one of several current and former NFL players produced by Northwestern (La.) Montana (NCAA Playoff)...Sparked NSU to 13-0 lead, including 73-yard TD pass on game's second play, and ran for 1-yard TD just before half, but Demons couldn't hold on in 28-19 loss...On NSU's final drive, after controversial call gave Montana fumble recovery in Demons' end zone, Nall guided team on last-gasp drive; final pass was perfect strike into the tight coverage, dropped in end zone...Finished 24-of-46 for 339 yards, one TD and no interceptions in collegiate farewell.

2000 SEASON

I have no problem with the signing.. we need 3 qbs anyway. But you gotta think this is going to make the depth chart look funny with all 3 guys penciled in as #2 :)
Is there any qb situation in the NFL that is more messed up?

Maybe Detroit? well no... McCown is there now

anywhere esle? Oakland? no... they are in draft positon to pick a good one.

anywhere esle?

Cant think of one....

So your saying your happy with our OL and DL as it stands right now? If you are than I can see why you would be so optimistic about the future of this 5-11 team! Then again your thinking has been shared by OBD for the last 6 years with respect to FA and that's work out well for us hasn't it?

This signing scares me because we now essentially have 3 #2 qbs on the team.

Nall will compete to start from day one. Levy brought him in to compete for the #1 job, nothing less. Losman is on short notice with this signing, and Holcomb's days may indeed be numbered, but only if Levy drafts a QB. Losman needs to show his worth this year or his time is most certainly done - plain and simple.

I like JP, and I know nothing about Nall, but I'm all for a QB battle in training camp. If Nall's the guy, then so be it. I have no problem with letting the best man win the job. I just want them to go into week one with a clear cut #1, and stick with him. Either way, the interior o-line needs to be fixed. Hopefully Wells or Neal lands here, or we get some nice quality in the deep o-line draft pool this year.

Royal starts. Our new SS is going to start (so no huff). Andre Davis will most likely start in a 3WR set. One of these DE's are going to start. Tripplett is going to start.

So where are all the backups? I can count about 4 new starters so far in Free agency.

Dennis Miller in one of his show had a line "crap is crap if they really want to screw you there give you 3 of those thing". Well here 4 cap starter are 4 crap starter. None of the would start on most other teams. So let's sign somemore of these 3rd and 4th tier guys, look what it got us the last several years, Teague, Anderson, Gandy and on an on. Now, you can disagree with that philosophy or not as you wish, but, like it or not, that is the approach that they are taking and anyone who read Levy's book should not be surprised by the fact that it is.

Let me ask all the people that think we are handling FA year correctly a question.

Does it really matter if we have JP, Nall or Holcomb at QB with the line we have right now?

I say no, whoever it is will get kill just like every other QB for the last 6 years that we have neglected of line! That all I'm saying we can't keep bring in crap and hope it turns into a rose!

but then u might as well CUT JP Losman. Bringing in Harrington would have taken whatever confidence JP had, completely out of him. :ill:

Not so. JP has said he'd work his butt off if there was good competition. Harrington would have been the best competion for him. Nall and Holcomb won't motivate him as much.

i like nall.. he has never looked bad in limited shots..

i will definately take another young guy to compete as opposed to an old ass guy like matthews.. i dont understand how this can possibly be considered a bad thing unless your just looking for something to piss and moan about.

I have a bad feeling about this. I think JP might be gone now that they have a guy with an arm to get the ball down field.
I think so too. Marv always did like arm QB's. It's looking like it will be Nall starting, and Holcomb as a back up. IMO, Nall is better than Holcomb, and it won't take long to beat him out in a competition. I just wish JP would have worked out better, 'cause I like his mobility. :(

I love this signing last season alone Nall got in 5 games;
23-33 314yds 4TD 0INT

Cut Holcolmb, draft Tavaris Jackson or Brett Elliott in rd 6 or 7 to be our developmental QB.

Great signing Marv!

Btw Kgun with as deep as this draft is we could easily get two new OL starters in rounds 2 and 3. Say for instance OT Andrew Whitworth in round 2 and then OG Charles Spencer in rd 3. That would give us a new RT, and a RG. Also two nasty lineman. I also want to see what happens with Wells and Israel before we pass any judgement. Denny Green said he was gonna match the offer but to this moment they still have not, and Israel no indication has been made either way. Those could easily be two new starters on our OL and DL.

Ice, tell me your not serious about thinking Bowen will be the starting SS next season? The guy is a ST ace and thats a big reason we signed him. Also good dpeth at a posistion where we have little, could spell the end of Coy Wire.

Seattle signs a Favre back-up, Hasselback, and Holmgren's a genius.

Buffalo signs a Favre back-up, and Marv's a dick.

What's the difference?

For starters the difference is Nall is a third-stringer not a backup.

For another, If this guy's future was that bright I doubt GB would have let him walk, and I doubt further they would have felt the need to take Aaron Rodgers last year. He is what he is, more depth.... Nothing more, nothing less.

That being said, I have no problem with his signing. Matthews isn't coming back and you're probably looking at his replacement. best case, he beats out Holcomb for the backup job, which I'd like to see very much.

Again, another signing shows activity. That's fine but it would be nice to see some guys come in who are DEFINITELY going to be starters.

This is the weirdest off-season I can recall. Weirder than any Donahoe, Butler or Polian off-season I can remember.. I can never in my lifetime remember the Bills signing so many young, unproven players in one year.

That is really jumping the gun. There's no evidence that JP is on the way out.

At this point I would have preferred Harrington. Better arm and quicker feet.

If he only had a head .....

The way Ralph is FRUGAL with money, they are not cutting Holcomb.

It would COST the team money to cut him, not save any..

You think we're going to cut him?

I"ll go one further.. The way we are neglecting our offensive line.. again

I predict HOlcomb is going to end up starting. He gets rid of the ball quick, which he'll have to with more rookies on the line.

I think Holcomb is a bum personally, but JP will get his neck broke by week three if our offensive line is has Preston and at least one new rookie starting.

Totally agree. This is a low-risk, high-reward signing.

Exactly.

This is a solid pickup for the QB competition.

this is a great pick up !! I really feel that this guy will be starting in the fall, and could end up being the steal of free agency.

According to some reports that were posted in other threads, they will cut Holcomb or JP. My comment was directly related to that, so how is that jumping the gun?

I like this signing. Young QB to compete for a spot instead of drafting one. And he was able to learn from Favre for 4 years. Not bad at all.

I'm sorry when I talked with Warner this summer I could have sworn he said he was the #3 guy on Green Bay's roster and was CUT. I also could have sworn he was asking paper or plastic B4 going to the Rams.

Funny how that works.
