Rich McKay is the early name and the fans here in Atlanta are praying its not him bc they want him to retain him as the GM.

Does Tagliabue name his successor?

I think it should be a player or coach that has retired from the NFL or from the Old School AFL. Someone that knows the rules of the game that can teach these refs to referee the right way. So they don't make up phantom calls against teams! For example the Buffalo Bills. "Just give it to them" ~ Andre Reed after the game in Foxborough Mass.

The new CBA only benefits the rich teams though. Once the salary cap skyrocets to 110+ million the smaller market teams or cheap owners like Ralph Wilson either won't be willing to use up that money or won't afford to be able to.

Ticket prices will also take a huge hike. The higher cap will mean the owners will have to find more income somewhere else to make up for the higher salaries.

The higher salary cap won't mean that teams will be able to bring in a more variety of good players. It just means that the players will be getting paid more.

Had it meant that teams would be able to bring in more impact players or help resign their own that would've been great. The salaries also jumped right up though. That just means the players will get more money and it will end up being just has hard to retain players. The evidence is in the FA market this year.

Last year the same player who would've gotten 3 million a year is getting 4+ million a year now.

without trying to get into a political pissing match, would you really want someone from the bush administration in a job where a huge part of the job is to AVOID conflict between two sides?

i think football (or at least sports) experience would be a plus, no? are they just throwing around names? how about al sahof, like justa said? he can allow the league to go to hell and tell us all it's okay.

It'll be either Roger Goodell (Tag's right-hand man) or Dick Cass (lawyer and president of the Ravens)

My money's on Goodell, with Tag's support behind him.

Some tidbits on Goodel from WGR (where Peter King called him the favorite):

Goodell hails from Jamestown and once dated Katerina Witt, the hot figure skater from Germany. I suspect that if he is from Jamestown he might well be the son of the former NYS Lieutenant Governor from Jamestown who has the same last name.

You're absolutly right TigerJ, I'm a sports reporter from Time Warner Cable 8 News here in Jamestown and we talked to Goodell assistant today. He's not taking interviews, but he is from Jamestown and his father was the senator. His cousin still lives in Jamestown. Would be interesting to have some ties in WNY in the NFL's front office!

goodell's name was the first one i heard mentioned, and it makes a lot of sense. when tagliabue came around, nobody knew who he was, but he had experience as counsel for the league.

the political figures are all too polarizing, and you don't want that as the head of your organization, especially one that's humming along as well as the NFL is. compromise isn't exactly a big part of american politics these days, anyway, and that's not cool for labor negotiations, etc.

i think it would be a big mistake to go for a "name." tagliabue wasn't a "name," and he turned out pretty good. rozelle became one by the time he was done, and that's how it should be. tags' right hand man sounds good enough...
