    Ralph's Pre-emptive Strike....

Based on the stuff I've read (by the way, once again, the D&C does a way better job than the snooze..) Ralph is worried about:

    1. Ralph is on the edge of not getting revenue sharing. Even though the Bills have the lowest ticket prices, they sell among the most tickets, and their overall revenue is closer to the middle of the pack than it is the bottom. If they count the tax break money he gets from the county and state, it will push him out of the sharing. Therefore, he doesn't want that to count.

    2. Since Ralph is so close to the edge, he will not sell naming rights because it might generate enough money to push him out of the revenue sharing.

    3. The other owners seem to be pushing for some provision that if a team changes hands it will not get revenue sharing. Well, Ralphie boy is 87. This may force him to turn over control to his daughters before he wants to.

Ralph has enough money for the cap, but he doesn't have enough to pay huge signing bonuses to the star palyers. Only the "rich" teams will be able to afford that, and football will evolve into baseball.

I also get the impression that the NFL does realize how important the Bills are to the area and that it will look bad if they leave.

Let me get this straight... The Bills are in the middle of the pack when it comes to revenue?

I still say his Wife gets the team. She's a huge fan and she's in her early 50's.

This post, along with NE39's read on it a few days ago, make all the sense in the world.

The NFL could care less. If both Cleveland and Baltimore could lose successful teams in the Browns and Colts - teams that had just as much- if not more rabid fans- and were so engrained in the league's history - They won't cry if the Bills solve their "Los Angeles" problem.

The Browns and Colts were involved in 13 of 20 NFL championship games between 1950 and 1970. The NFL did little to force those teams to stay

I think NE39 explained it like this-

The top 3rd pay into a fund to help suppliment the bottom third.

I think the Bills might be on the cusp if slipping into the middle third if the Bills maximized local revenue

So his gripe is corporate welfare, not that the Bills can't make money in a small market. Correct?

                    To a certain extent, yes.

Why should Ralph maximize local income if it reduces the revenue sharing he would get?

I totally agree. But why use the "small market we can't survive" angle?

Because the rich are very, very rich.

There is a large disparity in TOTAL revenue between the top and the bottom. That didn't matter as long as the non-football revenue didn't count in the cap, like before. Now that it does, no one will lose money, but some will be more limited than they were before.

So why aren't the other mid-level teams *****ing?

1- A lot of new ownership in the past 5-6 years. They bought into this knowing what's up. Falcons, Texans, Vikes, and so on

2- Younger ownership- They have forsight to realize things like the net, and other untapped but lucrative opportunities exist
