I won't be designating any RFA's. There isn't anybody making an extreme amount of money and I have plenty of cap room.

How do we go about obtaining a RFA? Do we just draft them and if I read it right earlier we just pay them more money?

Do they get a chance to match our offer or do we get them if we offer them more money?

Another question...

If we acquire a RFA can we sign them to a long term contract or is it just a 1 year deal?

Canadian'eh!

1-year deal...plus you lose a pick equal to that round next year.

Can you also remind us what happens if I have an earlier pick in the round am I allowed to draft a FA at the same salary that his team slated him for?
I.e. if my pick is before the assasins can I draft M. Birk at 4.0 mil? or do I have to sign him at 5 mil regardless of draft position.

Even though it's to my advantage for the former, I am hoping its that later.

To pick up an RFA you must draft them a dollar amount higher than that which they were offered. To draft Birk you would have to pick him at a $5 mil round or higher. Once the $5mil rounds are over he automatcally returns to his team. You have to beat the offer, not match it.

if we get nervous, can we up our bid?....say if we start thinking our player is going to get taken, can we draft him for a higher amount than our tag....we could call it the "Panic option"

So if we draft a RFA in the 1st round of the FA draft this year it cost us a 1st round pick in the FA draft next year too, correct?
