According to the Forbes article that is being used on this board to make some outrageous claims about the coming season, you should know that:

a) The numbers in Forbes are for the 2004 season, they are being published in 2005. The numbers are not for last season. With this data one cannot calculate profitability. One can note that if your operational margins are low, then you are very likely not profitable.

b) Gate Receipts for the 32 teams according to the Forbes article ran from 24mil to 79mil. These numbers include club seating. The Bills had 35mil. There were 26 other teams with higher gate receipts.

c) Revenues ran from 153mil to 287mil. The Bills had 173mil. There were 21 teams with higher revenues.

d) Operating margins(before tax, amortization, depreciation, interest expense, interest revenue, and tax) ran 5% to 27%. The Bills operating margin was 21%.There were 14 teams with operating margins below the league average of 17.2%. These were the teams that were having a more difficult time during the 2004 season according to Forbes. In the 2004 season the Bills were a well managed business. Only 8 teams had better operating margins.

e) Player costs(salary, benefits and bonuses) as a percentage of revenues ran from 35% to 66%. Buffalo players account for 55% of revenue. By the way, if Ralph is cheap, then 18 owners are cheaper.

f) In 2004 San Francisco, Dallas and Cincinnati player costs(salary, benefits, bonuses) were below the 2004 cap. All other teams were above the cap. This means that benefits and bonuses are really driving up player costs. For example, I think NFL teams match player contributions to their 401K program.

g) Debt as a percentage of revenue ran from 18% to 198%. For some teams debt is out of control. The Bills 41%. It would take the Bills about four years to pay off all debt under 2004 conditions. The Texans and Vikes on the other hand would take 40 years. The average for the league, team debt was 88% of team revenues.

h) Apart from player costs, interest payments on debt, depreciation, amortization and taxes; the cost of doing business(coaches salaries, marketing, advertising, management and support personel salaries) as a percentage of revenues ran from 24% to 41%. The Bills were at 24%. Generally business try to keep these numbers down. The league average was 30%. There were 30 teams with high non-player costs than the Bills. The Bengals were the only team better off than the Bills.

The Forbes article DOES NOT LIST OR CALCULATE

I seriously doubt the Bills are only making single digit millions in profits.

You have some good points, but my eyes hurt from reading them.

I sympathize...my fingers hurt from trying to format them.

I seriously doubt the Bills are only making single digit millions in profits.

In 2004...I would seriously doubt their profits were single digit too.
