Bob Glauber and Ken Berger, of Newsday, report there is increased speculation in league circles that the New York Jets (http://www.kffl.com/team/27/nfl) are giving serious consideration to drafting Maryland TE Vernon Davis (http://www.kffl.com/player/13477/nfl), whom some scouts consider one of the best talents at his position in years. The 6-3, 254-pound Davis has been on the rise on draft boards all spring because of his athleticism, 4.4 speed in the 40-yard dash and ability to stretch the field. Last season at Maryland, Davis had 51 catches for 871 yards and six touchdowns.

Jimmy Smith, of the New Orleans Times-Picayune (http://www.kffl.com/link/147), reports the New Orleans Saints (http://www.kffl.com/team/25/nfl) conducted a pre-draft visit with Maryland TE Vernon Davis (http://www.kffl.com/player/13477/nfl). Davis met with Saints (http://www.kffl.com/team/25/nfl) owner Tom Benson at a hotel Tuesday night, April 18, ate dinner and met informally with the coaching staff that also was in attendance, according to one of the player's agents. The Saints (http://www.kffl.com/team/25/nfl) also met with four other players during that timeframe.
Now, that stuff can just be smokescreens to lure teams away from where they are truly headed.
But, if in fact Davis has become so hot that he could be taken at 2 or 4, theres no way he drops to 8.
Moreover, if Davis goes at 2 or 4, there are some very dumb teams at the top of this draft. The Jests blow. They have no QB, period. They will have a shot at at LEAST the 3rd best and most likely the 2nd best or 1st best in there eyes at 4, yet they take a TE?
They have no RB, no Pass rusher anymore, no stud OT, nothing and there record shows it. But they take a TE? Thats just stupid.
NO, I would not clamor for Davis at 4, at 8? yes. But NOT at 4. If we stunk that bad, we should be talking about a franchise QB, top RB, or top D player at 4, not a TE.
At 2? Are you kidding me? They get the top QB or the top RB, or even the top DE and they take a TE? That is monumentaly stupid. I dont care if hes better than Gates.
But, I think its still a smokescreen. I think SF is the first spot that Davis fans have to sweat, the 6th pick.
Finally, if he goes ANY higher than 6, I wont be sad at all, I will think whatever team that took him is just plain stupid. Theres plenty of great players that will be at our pick, if Davis is there, great, if not, no problem, we have lots of needs and there lots of good talent.
