My guess is we will need 5-6 million to sign draftees- more if we choose to trade down- acquiring more picks.

We had a rookie cap of over $5 million in 2003 when we drafted 4th overall.

The cap has gone up about 20% since then, and we have extra picks this year.

Maybe I'm wrong, I certainly could be..

But I thought we need to put away about $3 million to sign our draft picks.

If that's not the case, there are teams drafting ahead of us with far less cap money that wont have the money to sign their picks (Raiders, Jets and Titans all have less money than us)

That's why teams make June 1 cuts, and why players wait until the day before camp to sign

While our rookie pool may be in that range, the actual impact on the salary cap will be less because of the "top 51" rule......

The NFL allots teams only so much to spend on rookies- the rookie pool is a cap within the salary cap and each team's pool is different- it depends on how many players were drafted, and where.

Teams with higher draft picks get a bigger pool. The Bills have 4 top 100 picks- and all are in the top 10-12 of each round- so we will most likely have a very high pool number.

Now- guys drafted in Rds 5-6-7 will make peanuts- rookie league minimum- Between $225,000 and $300,000.

Our guys drafted late and making below $275,000 or so will not be in the Bill's top 51 total salaries. Those won't count vs the cap until the Bills trim to the roster limit before the season starts

Only the top 51 salaries count vs the cap

unless the info comes from Clump, I dont put much faith in it. He's the expert

LOL- he sends me all the cap info for editing. I may be off a little with the exact figures- but it's close.

Go to Clump's cap page and see what Justin Geisinger or Eric King made last year.

                            Not true..

My only dispute was us needing $5-6 million for this draft.. I could have sworn I read several articles that said the Bills need to have between $2-3 million put away for this draft.

Now I'll be the first to admit that the salary cap is not my football area of expertise. I can figure out how to prorate a signing bonus and add the base salarie to come up with cap numbers, and that's about it.

Regardless, I think the best thing to do with this money is to try and lock up as much of the core of players here now as possible: Peters, Willis, Nate and extend Fletch for 1-2 more years, he was awesome last year.
