Jets | Rumor alert: NFL Draft trade
Tue, 25 Apr 2006 08:46:30 -0700

Rich Cimini, of the New York Daily News, reports one rumor making the rounds has the New York Jets (No. 4) swapping their first-round pick with the Oakland Raiders (No. 7), who want a quarterback. The Jets then select Oregon DT Haloti Ngata with the seventh pick. The Jets don't have a pure nose tackle for their new 3-4 scheme.

If this is true, first of all.....who are the radiers targeting, and if Ngata is a Jet what do we do with the very next pick??

I think we stand pat and take Bunkley.....

Bush
Dbrick
Leinhart
Young
Williams / Hawk
Williams / Davis / Hawk
Ngata

No way Williams falls to us, but Hawk might. If Hawk and Williams are both gone, we trade down to someone who is in love with Davis.

Except that this trade up doesn't make sense. Oakland would have had Young at #7 regardless. The only way the trade makes sense is if TEN chooses Young and Oakland moves up for Leinart...but then, I doubt Jets would execute on the trade since they themselves would probably be interested in Leinart...

No one's ever accused Al Davis of making sense.
Plus, it's no given that both Leinart and Young won't be gone after #4.

Wouldn't surprise me if Oakland stayed put and took Huff.

All of this is one big smokescreen.

This day and age no team is going to want to pay the steep price of trading up to the top spots. Teams have holes to fill and don't want to give up draft picks. So when push comes to shove, people will stay put and make the safe pick, ala Brick/Williams/Bush/Leinart. With Bush/Leinart/Williams gone by the 4th pick, the Jets will take Brick (the safe pick). GB will take Hawk, safe pick. Everyone else after that involves a certain amount of risk, and we'll stay put and take Bunkley.

It makes perfect sense. They want a QB and aren't taking a chance. but if the Jests want a QB this trade won't happen which means Oakland must talk with New Orleans

Or we could stay where we are and draft Davis ourselves.

Probably wont happen but one of these guys will be there:

Ngata, Davis, Huff, Bunkley, Young any of those guys would help this team.

Jp-Era.. dont even pay attention to him.

The Raiders are trying to move up because they want VERNON DAVIS, folks.. That's why they want to move up to four.. Davis is a LOCK to go at six to SF if they dont trade up.. Its pretty simple.

You have lost your mind if you think hes dropping to us.

Not entirely. I think Tennessee actually holds our fate. We can easily say Bush, and Williams are the top 2. If the Titans take Young (which is definately possible), then the Jets are looking at Leinhart at 4 and they definately wont pass on him. Then you have GB who will probably go Hawk. Theres no way SF takes another tackle after siging Jennings and Larry Allen. The Raiders just spent a top 3 pick on an OT. So that could leave us with Brick. Now if the Jets trade with the Raiders, IMO thats bc the Raiders want Vince bad. This would cause problems bc then IMO the Jets would be able to take Brick ahead of us still. Brick falling is not out of the question at all. Maybe not likely, but anything can happen. You think the Packers thought Rodgers would fall all the way back to them last year? Anything can happen.

patmoran2006

No..
JP is right.. there is NO WAY Brick is falling to 8.. IF it he doesnt go top five the conventional way, GB WILL trade down for someone to take him at 5.

Anything can happen thats true. The Lions took three WR's in the 1st round 3 years in a row, that fact and your comment on Rodgers means we need to just wait and see.

But D'Brick is SO good that the Raiders could EASILY justify taking him if he dropped to them at 7. Even with Gallery and Allen.

I think it goes to show that theres plenty of teams that go against conventional wisdom when a great talent at a not so big need drops to them.

Pat, I like Davis like you do and I think hes a top 5 talent. But I think the posturing has more to do with QB's than anything else. I just cant see any team moving to the 4 pick for a TE. But yes, I agree hes THAT good.

I still can see a chance that he slips to us. It just may happen, its getting close. Im getting stoked for the draft!

I hope your right dude.. There aint nobody I want in this draft or in the last five years for that matter than Vernon Davis.

A tight end too.. Imagine that

My hope is that all three QBs go in the top 7. Which is also a possibility if the Jets trade with the Raiders. Mayock makes sense when he says that Cutler is a prototypical NY QB due to the strong winds that require a strong arm, add to that the fact that they know they can trade down to the 7th spot and still get Cutler. That would mean that Buffalo would have a shot at one of Williams, Brick, Davis, or Hawk. Either way we get a good football player, without paying top 5 money.

BTW, Mayock on NFLN just had SF on the clock and stated that 2 QB's taken above SF lets Hawk slip to them and that Nolan would favor Hawk after losing Peterson and having Eric Johnson.

Next he had Oak taking the 3rd QB or Huff.

He had us taking one of the DT's and Davis sliding to 10 but yes, that means Davis fell to us according to him.

For what its worth.

I dont see Cutler going as the top QB. But I COULD see a team taking Cutler above Young based on his arm.

But, everything I see has Tenn VERY interested in Young or Leinhart. Cutler hasnt been mentioned with Tenn as far as Ive seen.

this means we want matt look at this

(10:38 PM) More news from Green Bay. It looks like they are going to try and force San Francisco to move up to 5. As everyone knows, Vernon Davis is #1 on their board. Green Bay may tempt SF to trade picks with them and GB would add a 3/4th round pick in the mix. San Francisco may be trying to move up to 3, but Tennessee won't trade unless their trading to Oakland. New York Daily News (scroll down): "One rumor yesterday: The Jets (No. 4) swap first-round picks with the Raiders (No. 7), who want a quarterback, and select Oregon NT Haloti Ngata with the seventh pick... Such a move would raise questions about the future of DT Dewayne Roberston, who may not fit in a 3-4." (http://www.billszone.com/fanzone/New%20York%20Daily%20News%20%28scroll%20down%29:%20)

I would be surprised if it happened. The Raiders have signed Aaron Brooks to be a stop gap QB, and they drafted Andrew Walter last year as a developmental guy. Granted, Walter was not a super blue chip guy, but he has more of a gun than either Young or Leinart for the deep ball that I'm sure the Raiders want to be a part of their vertical game. With Ramsey and Pennington as their QBs, I think the Jets have more questions at QB than the Raiders. If it did happen, it wouldn't have a huge effect on Buffalo's draft plans. It would obviously take Ngata out of the equation for Buffalo, but it leaves Bunkley and the trade down option in place.
