I know it's early, but with Houston signing Mario Williams and passing on Reggie Bush with the # 1 pick in the draft this is shaping up to be one of the most unpredictable NFL drafts ever. Day One is looking like it's going to be a really wild day, so strap on your seatbelts, sit back and enjoy the ride!

The draft doesn't officially start for another approx. 6 hours and 15 minutes, but the action could begin at any moment this morning.

Houston is on the clock and their pick of Mario Williams won't be official until they hand their card into the Commish, with Reggie Bush now going to still be on the board when New Orleans goes on the clock for the second pick in the draft and 5 teams reportedly already having contacted the Saints about trading up to the # 2 spot, the jockeying in the Top 10 has already begun.

You can bet that the phones will be ringing and the airwaves singing all morning long! The Sun is up and anything can happen. It's going to be interesting and a lot of fun, especially to see what Marv Levy and the Bills braintrust decide to do with their picks! I can't wait!!!

LET'S GO BUFFALO!!!
GO GET 'EM, MARV!!!

THE END OF ALL DAYS
04-29-2006, 06:36 AM
Well, I am all-a-tingle!

I have to work till about 2, so I will have my radio tuned in and internet running so I can keep track of the action.... it just got more interesting with the texans action last night.

texas really goofed up everyones mocks and it willl be a free for all today!

GO BUFFALO!

Have fun everyone!

Only a couple of hours left to go. I'll check back in this thread.

I really thought last night that the Saints were definitely going to trade that their 2nd pick because they could get so much for it, but last night ESPN reported the Bush's agent said the Saints were going to pick him. Plus the fact that, Bush is really the type of player they need to fill up the stands in that devastated city...

I just hope Bush won't be a Jet!

I seen that too.. Someone suggested the Saints rep would sprint to the podium to take Bush.. Personally I dont buy it.

But at the end of the day it would be hard to pass him up..

The saints wont take bush. but they have to make you belive they will if they want to trade the pick.

I think the Jets trade up, Take bush. Tenn takes Matt Lienart, New Orleans takes D Brick, Green Bay takes Hawk, SF takes Davis, Oak takes Young.

Our phone then rings off of the friggin hook to get Cuttler. IF Oakland passes on young we still will not take a QB because Marv isn't going to wait 3-4 years for a guy to develop. We will then get a better offer to trade down than what we would have got with just 1 QB there.

Marv and Ralph won't wait for JP and give him an undisputed full season so they aren't going to start over. If none of the QB's on this roster is the guy, look for us to try and sign a Veteran that can lead us or trade for one if possible. We wont' take a QB in round 1.

If you read between the lines with what Modrak said more than once last week, Broderik Bunkley is probably going to be the pick. His preference (Modrak) is for Defensive Tackle in round one.

Thats why I think we heard Levy talk last week on bb.com about trading down no more than 4 spots, if they do at all.

But my question pat is how far can we move down and still get Bunkley? I think no further than 11 with STL. Thoughts?

Detroit wont take a DT.. Arizona will take a QB or Justice.. and the Rams will probably take Ngata.

Cleveland may jump on Bunkley at 12.

So IMO, 3 spots to be safe, and DEFINITELY no more than 4 spots.

I think there is a good possibility Detroit takes a DT. They dont have Wilkinson anymore that just leaves Rogers and Tayoka Jackson. Since they are switching to a Cover 2 as well they could definitely use a DT like Bunkley.

Good question. Depends on if a team really wants to trade up for Leinart. Or, if Philly wants one of the DTs bad enough to make it worth our while to pass on Ngata and Bunkley to get the extra picks. Bunkley is probably our fall-back position if the Bills can't make a deal here. Having only one QB go in the top 7 hurts the Bills' leverage....

That has to make four teams very interested in our pick: Minny who wants Cutler, Denver who wants Leinart, Philly who wants Bunkley, and St.Louis, who has to be concerned that, if we trade down, they will lose out on a QB if Arizona takes the third of the "Big Three". That's the kind of leverage the Bills need to get some competition going and up the price for their pick. Let's hope that the price gets high!!!

This is not as big a surprise as it may seem.

I've posted this a couple of times recently: there were reports that the Bills really were impressed by Whitner when they interviewed him at the Combine and he told ESPN that he really loved them after he talked with them. The Bills have done really well with Ohio State DBs in recent years and Whitner put up excellent numbers at the Combine and at Ohio State. Also, Whitner is an excellent fit for the Cover 2.

I would have liked to see the Bills trade down a little, pick up a pick, and still get Whitner, but they could not go down lower than Miami who was also very interested in him. I'm a little surprised that the Bills didn't go with a DT, but it seemed that there was something that came up in the last couple of days that turned them off on Bunkley and Ngata, so maybe they didn't think those guys were worth that high of a pick. Now they will have to get their DTs later on in the draft or in free agency. Second round is a possible starting point.

I don't know much about this guy as we all had been concentrating on other guys leading up to this point. At least we won't have Coy Wire at SS this season. I have to do some research on him before making my comments but I will say this. There are plenty of DT's available in the draft this year that can be pretty damn good. So, if Marv had him as the 2nd best safety on the board and the next best DT could be had in the 2nd then I like it....We shall see.

Absolutely. Whitner shouldn't have been as much of surprise as he was, but a lot of people just don't want to hear that there could be alternatives to the guys that they have fallen in love with. Whitner has been very productive and is very versatile and a good fit in the defense that they are running.

Maybe, maybe not. It's easy to say, "make this trade" or "we should make that trade", but in the real world of the NFL that's a lot harder to do than most fans think. It can be hard to find a partner that will give you what you want for the risk you may have to run to get a player. If St.Louis was not willing to trade up and Philly--which is notorious for not wanting to give up draft picks--was not offering much, it would have been hard for the Bills to trade down and be assured that they could get Whitner.

What a lot of people are discounting is that there were reports recently that Miami was really hot for Whitner. With that in the wind, the Bills could not afford to drop below Miami or tip their hand and let Miami jump ahead of them if they wanted Whitner that badly. From the reports I read from the Combine, the Bills really liked Whitner a lot and he really liked them--that usually makes for a good combination--so the Bills may have decided that he was going to be their man when they started to sour on Bunkley (and they did seem to sour on him at some point this week--I don't know why, but it was reported that they weren't as high on them as a lot of people thought).

The thing a lot of people are forgetting is that Detroit was projected to take Huff, if he got past Oakland and Buffalo, and they may have gone with Whitner rather than the LB. The Bills could not be certain that they would get their man if they dropped past Detroit. Miami was also a factor because they were reportedly very hot on Whitner as well.

The Bills may have figured that Bunkley or Ngata would not have been worth losing out on Whitner and picking up a third round pick. The teams that they were talking to might not have been willing to give up a second round pick.

As someone else said, there are still a lot of good players out there. The Bills have filled one of their needs with a guy who they really love and who fits their system. Now we will have to see what they do later on.

Goes to show that you don't know who's going to still be on the board when you make a trade before you are on the clock.

The fact that only one QB went in the first 7 picks of this draft really changed the dynamics of the first round and what the Bills could do or get for their pick. I can see how that may have forced the Bills to take Whitner a little before maybe even they wanted to because they did not want to risk losing out on him if they traded down.

God, I hope this guy is another Ed Reed.

But, they may not feel that those other guys--specifically the DTs--and the extra pick would have been worth having to go with what they would have considered to be a lesser safety.

Just like some of us fans were extremely high on certain players and would not risk passing up on a particular player for anything--for various reasons--they may have been very high on Whitner for certain reasons that we may not be aware of. All I know is that there were reports that they were very high on Whitner and were very impressed with him after they interviewed him at the Combine, where he performed very well.

I don't think you can expect a guy to be Ed Reed just because they picked him there instead of a few picks lower--because Whitner does fill a need. But, I do agree that he does need to prove to be a very good player who fills that need well.

A lot of pre-draft reviews, including Pat Moran's, had Whitner compared to Mike Doss. If he turns out to be a healthy Mike Doss, would you be happy? Would you consider him a reach?

The guy was a versatile playmaker who was always around the ball for a pretty good college defense. If he plays like that for the Bills, who cares whether they drafted him with the # 8 pick or the # 11 or # 14 pick? Why don't we wait to see this kid play before we start screaming that this pick sucks and go looking to tar-and-feather Marv Levy? We don't even know who else the Bills are going to take in this draft and everyone is going nuts here.

Let me remind everyone who now expect this kid to be the next Ed Reed because the Bills used the # 8 pick to get him that Reed was taken much later in the first round and ended up being a lot better than players who were taken 5-6 picks before him. Do you think there are some teams that wish that they could redo their pick in that draft and take that safety from Miami that they passed on for the higher rated player that they took?

I in no way attacked our pick. Im sick of people trying to make our pick seem so much better. Just because Carpenter was a reach by Dallas shouldn't make us feel better reaching for Whitner.

It seems there are a lot of teams reaching for players this year. So we aren't the only one, but in the end i just want the Bills to be better, and if we could have traded down then thats what should have happened

I also hope that I am as proven wrong about the pick as I was wrong about how the Sabres would perform this year.
