    More on Whitner

Gil Brandt had Whitner as the top safety. Huff and Allen will play corner. So realistically, he was the top safety of the class.

    Top 5 Safeties
Rank Player School Height Weight 40-yard dash
    1 Donte Whitner Ohio State 5-10 1/8 204 4.45
    2 Daniel Bullocks Nebraska 6-0½ 212 4.40
    3 Darnell Bing Southern Cal 6-2 225 4.58
    4 Ko Simpson South Carolina 6-1 209 4.44
    5 Anthony Smith Syracuse 6-0 1/8 194 4.73

I predict a small "surprise" and say Bullocks goes next to Cinci..

He was interviewed by Bills and comments said he reminded them of Henry Jones.

This may only be based on opinion, but whitner sounds like a great pick based on this scouting report.

I saw him a number of times. I'm not as familiar with DB technique as I am with line and linebacker play (I played line and LB, the DBs worked on that stuff in a separate group most of the time), but I liked what I saw of him because he seemed to be around the ball a lot. He helped out their CBs a lot in coverage. He was a guy whose name seemed to get mentioned a lot on a defense that was pretty good and had some very good LBs. And, I do remember him having a huge, game-changing fumble recovery return for a TD, but I can't remember what team that was against.
Those who do not learn from the past are doomed to repeat it. And, thus it was that they surrendered their freedom; not with a bang, but without even a whimper.

Whitner is a good player, yes. A coverage safety which is an area he excels in. Has good closing speed, smart defender and doesn't get caught out of position.

His weaknesses are in run stopping and tackling.

Which in a cover 2 you don't need safeties who can knock peoples' teeth out, you need guys who have smarts, closing speed and coverage skills.

I don't knock the pick of this guy or dislike it in the sense of who we got, just where we got him at kinda irks me.

                    Re: More on Whitner

All of the draft gudies I have (7) say his physical abilities and tackling are one of his biggest assets.

From watching him play his tackling abilities were his weakness.

Not saying he's completely terrible at tackling or run stopping, well run stopping yes, he wasn't needed or asked to do that at Ohio St. When you have Hawk and Carpenter, your safety doesn't need to worry about the run. The thing is he excelled at being around the ball and closing on plays.

Quit making excuses. Allen is definitely not a CB. Miami desperately needs a S, and obviously the genius of the SEC (Nick Saban) is not drafitng a CB. That's something Marv Levy would do...
