From walk-on to full-time starter, Merz has improved steadily and rapidly to claim his spot on an accomplished and nationally-recognized offensive line ... must be considered a viable candidate for All-Pac-10 honors in 2005 after claiming honorable mention status last year ... missed spring 2005 workouts due to shoulder surgery, but should be back at full health by the start of training camp in August ... 2004 ... started all 12 games for the Bears ... produced 31.5 pancake blocks during the year - second only to Marvin Philip's 43.5 - and had a whopping 10.5 vs. Texas Tech in the Holiday Bowl ... won the starting left guard spot coming out of spring practice, despite seeing limited time due to shoulder surgery in December 2003 ... 2003 ... filled in admirably for the injured Jonathan Giesel at left guard, drawing the starting nod the final four games of the season, including the 2003 Insight Bowl, and six of the final eight contests ... the offensive line continued to function well in Giesel's absence, a tribute to Merz's high-level play down the stretch ... 2002 ... appeared in 10 games as a reserve left tackle ... 2001 ... walked on and redshirted. High School/Personal: First player from his high school in 18 years to play on an NCAA Division I team ... earned first team all-league honors as both an offensive and defensive lineman his senior year ... also served as team punter ... voted both team MVP and Most Scholastic, as well as team captain ... named the South Sequoia League Student-Athlete of the Year ... in addition to football, earned honors in basketball and golf ... spent 11 months as an exchange student in Argentina ... hobbies include raising parrots and playing golf ... parents are Eric and Gaylene Merz ... born Aug. 27, 1983 in Bakersfield, CA ... sociology major.

From SI.com:
BIO: Three-year starter at both guard positions. Previous All-Conference selection.

POSITIVES: King-sized blocker who can be a dominant force. Plays with good pad level, naturally strong and pushes defenders from the line of scrimmage. Anchors in pass protection and walls opponents from the action. Nasty and always looking for someone to hit.

NEGATIVES: Lacks adjustment, not light on his feet and gets tall as the play proceeds. Not considered a hard worker who does the extras. Shoulder injuries have been a concern in the past.

ANALYSIS: A former walk-on with the size and intelligence to play in the NFL, Merz is a gifted lineman with starting potential. Must consistently give effort on and off the field.

PROJECTION: Undrafted Free Agent<!-- / message -->
