Levy thought McCargo could have been had at 42

It appears that Modrak, Juaron and other convinced Marv to move up.

Wide spaces between player grades at a position also had an impact on their draft. It was what led the Bills to trade back up into the first round to select N.C. State's John McCargo. Buffalo had to sacrifice a third round pick to move up 15 slots to ensure they landed the defensive tackle. Some observers thought McCargo could be had with pick 42, including Marv Levy, but he was eventually convinced by the other men at the head table that it was a move that had to be made.

"On the board at some positions after certain players there were some big drop-offs," said Levy. "There was a big drop-off at the defensive tackle position in terms of grades put on our guys after where McCargo was on the board. For a long while I honestly thought he would still be there when we picked 15 picks later (#42). But after we rehashed it and looked at that gap we decided not to take the risk and drop that far in our grading system. So we traded up and sacrificed a third round choice."

So much for saying Marv doesn't know what he is doing. We won't ever know if McCargo would have dropped to 42 had the Bills not taken him but we can at least say that the Bills did not have their draft boards completely different from everyone else with McCargo.

The bills moved up just to secure getting their guy.

Who has final say? Marv. Who moved up? Marv. Maybe marv should have kept to his convictions?

No Marv believes in consensus and acts on his beliefs. If he overruled them he would just be a Tom Donahoe not listening to advice from football staff.

        exactly correct

plus he acknowledges the very real possibility theyd be left with a much less talented tackle so they intentionally sacrificed the third rounder to do it. he concurred with that decision so really it was his as well

a bold move but considering that only about half the third round picks stick in the nfl they obviously felt it was worth that investment

of course, we could have had a tackle at 8 instead of a reach safety, making a bold move unnecessary.

But somehow that point gets lost....

Nice to have a GM that listens to his coach and the rest of his hired staff. The more info that comes out, the more it sounds like Marv handled himself very well this draft.
