The San Francisco 49ers' coaching search ended Tuesday with -- surprise -- Dennis Erickson. ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports that the Oregon State coach was the 49ers' final choice even though he wasn't among the known group of final candidates, which included Ted Cottrell, Greg Blache and Jim Mora Jr.

ESPN is reporting the 49ers will name Dennis Erickson as head coach. I don't even recall his name being a candidate

http://espn.go.com/nfl/news/2003/0211/1507238.html

I guess this means that Dick Lebeau won't get the Bears DC job which means he most likely will land in Buffalo. It also means Ted Cottrell plays bridesmaid once again.

What a load of crap! Erickson already fell on his face in Seattle, so based on what credentials did he deserve this job. I really feel bad for Ted C. IMO, he will make a great head coach someday in the NFL.:madcurse:

I agree. Ted deserves a HC job in this league. I know if the 49ers hired him, I would have rooted for Ted to do well.

I agree totally Venis2k1. I think this is an awful choice. I hope that he fails miserably in SF. They never should have fired Mariucci is the first place. What a terrible hire. TO must be pissed!

Why does everyone think that TC deserves a head coaching job in the NFL?

Honestly, other than the fact he is black, what has he ever done to warrant a HC position?

If, being a good DC was the only proof for success, then we should have an AWESOME head coach, not the the absent minded manboobed one we currently have.

Remember, statistically, GW's D was superior to TC's.

I'm happy for Ted that he didn't get this job. The head coach in SF will be nothing more than a puppet.

I do think TC deserves a job though.

What the hell are they thinking!??!?! They must have just had a GW type interview with him.

I read earlier today that Cotrell was the leading man and will most likely get the job, but they were going to interview more college candidates. Now they hire some scrub college coach over NFL experience, like Cotrell, like Denny Green and others.

Hmmm, Dennis Erickson OVER Steve Mariucci!?!??! Bwaahhahahahahahahaha!

Pride, what else does Ted C. have to do to deserve a shot as a HC? Every year he has a defense that gives his team the ability to compete every Sunday. Aside from the first four games of the year, the Jets defense was one of the best in the NFL. I really don't care what color his skin is, he has paid his dues.

I disagree! What has Ted Cotrell really done? He has been given some damn good talent and works with it. Although, I'd pick him over Marvin Lewis anyday. Lewis is VERY overrated! I think that Cotrell needs to work with someone on his interviews if he has been bybassed all these times. Buffalo Bills....NY Jets.....SF 49ers? What does he do wrong? M aybe the GMs realize that he really is nothing special and not HC material yet.

The 49ers wanted someone who would be a YES man. Cottrell isn't a ****** and wouldn't take the crap from the 49ers front office. They picked Erickson because he'd do anything they say for another shot.

This explains why they interviewed the crap out of Cotrell and Blache. They wanted a good old boy retread all along.

Mike32282, name me one coach who had success without talent. Ted C. has earned the right to see if he can make it as a HC. I am so sick of seeing the same faces resurface every time there is a HC opening. Have some balls and give someone else a shot at it.

Not all DC and OC's can make the advancement to HC.

I think that Teddy as well as GW are two of these guys.

Remember Wade? He also fits into that category.

Perhaps there needs to be less hiring of OC and DC's in the league, and more hiring of College HC's for new blood.

This sucks for TC but in a way I am glad he did not get the job. I hate the 49ers............I'd like to see him go to a team as a HC that I don't hate

I can see why blacks would be po'd in this case. They hire a guy who has proved he could not win in the NFL.

Teddy did not get too much out of the Jet's good talent on D. He did well in Blo, but not so much in NJ.

I was stunned when I caught this blip (Erickson) on the news today.

I don't think he's HC material, and I haven't changed my opinion one bit in 2 years.

There's a reason why nobody wants him as HC, and it isn't because he's black. I don't buy that crap and I think this entire hiring process that they enforced is a slap in the face for most black coaches.

All these GM's pass on him every year. There has to be something about him that keeps him as a DC. I don't think he's capable of handling the entire team.

Another thing to look at, both teams he's been a DC had defensive HC's. He ran Wades 3-4 system in Buffalo, and he ran Edwards 4-3 in NY. Our defense was great in Buffalo, and it's been average for the Jets. If he did a great job with his OWN defense on another team with an offensive coach I might think differently, but that's not the case. Does Cottrell even have his own system?

There's been plenty other coaches over the past 5+ years with the same credentials that have never gotten a HC job. Some people get them, some people don't. He's just another name on a long list.

I was shocked over this, and so is everyone else out here. From the news people, to the fans....etc. The big problem I see with Erickson is his inability to control his players. It happened in Miami and in Oregon. If he can't control college kids, how in the world is he going to control Owens???

Cntrygal

Owens will get mad (or his feelings hurt) and just won't talk to Erickson.
