Damien Cox on Ottawa's growing reputation of choking in the playoffs following yet another lacklustre and disappointing exit
Sweet
Praise for the Sabres and the Bills in one article.
The Ottawa Senators aren't the Buffalo Bills.
In their dreams, the Sens can only hope to one day reach that level.
They can only imagine getting to the big game four times. This is a franchise that has built a legacy of coughing it up well before the big game ever arrives.
The Senators, despite all the talent amassed by a string of canny general managers, have only made it to one conference final since becoming a serious playoff team.
And in that series back in 2003, they gagged on home ice in Game 7 to the New Jersey Devils. They've lost four straight series to the Maple Leafs. Now, they've lost 10 of 11 playoff games to the Buffalo Sabres.
So how owner Eugene Melnyk goes about putting the pieces back together after bowing out in five quick games to those Sabres this spring is a question Melnyk probably can't even begin to contemplate yet.
Of those five games, three went to overtime, and in all three none of the Senators marquee shooters could supply the decisive shot.
Chris Drury could. J.P. Dumont could. And, oh yes, waiver wire reject Jason Pominville could. But not one of those splashy Senator snipers could.
