Chiefs Release Stanford Routt
I hope Buddy Nix picks this guy up on waivers we need another starting corner, even if Aaron Williams is not hurt.
That being said I doubt it because of his contract but would love to have him on our team wanted him when he was cut originally would be big.

More so for long term than this week, because he has a 4 year deal if I am not mistaken but would instantly make our coverage better. He was not suited for the style of defense the chiefs want to run he is a press man cover guy like we want to run.
Re: Chiefs Release Stanford Routt
if he was released, why do we have to pick him up on waivers? If the Bills wanted him, couldn't they just sign him to a new contract?

Because if we pick him up on waivers he has to come here, so we don't have to compete with other teams. But then we get locked into his contract, however big that is.

so released players automatically go on waivers? For how long?
Re: Chiefs Release Stanford Routt
I think he signed a pretty big contract. 6 mil this year alone.
I bet Indy picks him up.

I think it's just a couple of days, I'm not entirely sure. That's how we got Merriman though.

During the season (starting July 4 and lasting through the regular season), each team has 24 hours to file a claim for a player that another team has made available through the system or waive the right to do so. During the off season each team has several days to file such claims. Claiming teams are assigned the rights to or contracts via a priority system based on inverse order of winning percentage. Players that pass through waivers unclaimed become free agents.

Re: Chiefs Release Stanford Routt
Buddy wanted to sign this guy after the Raiders released him.
Re: Chiefs Release Stanford Routt
I believe the waiver period is just 24 hours.
This is the guy that the Bills actually tried to sign back before free agency began and I believe it came down to the Bills, Chiefs, and Bengals. So maybe there is a chance he comes here.
Re: Chiefs Release Stanford Routt
Yeah, we better pick him up. How else are we going to guarantee that we don't get a top-5 draft pick? We gotta make sure we win enough games to push us into the 8-12 range where we belong. 7-9 BABY!!!!

Yeah, because 1 corner will give us 3 more wins that without him.. If we can afford his contract, I'm all for signing this guy.

lol, obviously, one free agent CB won't single-handedly win us 3 games. I never said that.
But are we in "save the season" mode, or "think about next year" mode? Personally, I've completely and utterly given up on this season. We aren't going to go 6-1 and make the playoffs, so why bother picking up guys with big salaries to improve our team? At this point, I'd rather just lose-out and get a top-5 pick.
Each meaningless win screws us on draft day. If we had lost one more game last year, we could've taken Kuechly or Tannehill, instead of Gilmore. In 2011, we could've had Von Miller over Dareus. We could've had Patrick Willis instead of Lynch if we had lost one more meaningless game. You can't tell me we would be better off at this point adding more mediocre players.
Re: Chiefs Release Stanford Routt
They cut him because he was making 6.5 million and was getting beat on a regular basis.
Hey! He'd fit right in!
Re: Chiefs Release Stanford Routt
Wouldn't be surprised to see Miami look at him.
Re: Chiefs Release Stanford Routt
Maybe a silly question, but why would the Bills want a player cut by a 1-7 team...?

By us, no less. Fitz and Spiller pooped on their D that game.
Re: Chiefs Release Stanford Routt
The thing that bugs me most about Williams at corner is that coming out of college, he was rated a top safety, so of course he's playing corner. Imagine that, the Bills playing someone out of position.

Why can't we be in both? If we pick him up off waivers, we get his contract, too.

I don't think he gets claimed because his base is $1.8M. Any team that claims him will inherit 8/17ths of that, so they have to pay him $847,059 for the remainder of the year. It is possible, but I think teams would rather wait for him to clear and sign him for the minimum.
Nobody is going to keep him beyond this year. He has a $10M option bonus and a $4.3M salary for 2013.

This is a very good question.
I don't know much about the guy. I only watch the Chiefs when we play them and I didn't have any particular reason to watch Rout at the time, so I really have no idea if this guy is good enough to help us or not. But the fact that he got cut mid-year by a 1-7 team is not a good sign.
If it were the off-season, this could be seen as a salary dump, but who cares about dumping salary in the middle of the year? It doesn't make sense as a salary move alone.
