What's with all the injuries?
Yet Another Bills RB, Wood, tears his ACL.
And this is not just the Bills... Here is a off the top of my head list:
Jamal Charles - our for season
Odell Beckham Jr - expected to miss next week
Julio Jones - expected to miss next week
Andre Ellington - finally back
M Bryant
Romo & Big Ben
A Jeffery
Dez Bryant
Jordi Nelson
McCoy & Karlos Williams.....etc
Hamstring & Groin injuries are becoming very common. One theory is that it's the result of new training camp protocol.
Re: What's with all the injuries?
hugely muscled men flying full speed at each other clad in rock hard plating
hmm nothing there
Re: What's with all the injuries?
When OBJ went back out there and drew a huge PI, I was just thinking about our own "ferrari"..
Re: What's with all the injuries?
Starting to wonder if this new artificial turf isn't a problem. Especially the number of hamstring problems across the league. No one can play a starting lineup.
Re: What's with all the injuries?
IMO with teams running more up tempo offenses, I believe that when the athletes become fatigued, injuries are more likely to occur. I would like to see the rosters expanded to allow more substitutions, especially now with more players having to go through the concussion protocol.
Re: What's with all the injuries?
I have heard it the result of all the changes made to training camp.
appearently WR & RB can't get their bodies ready for the season with minimal contact training.

Yep - I read about that.
Re: What's with all the injuries?
Instead of all of these happening in pre season, they are happening weeks 2-4 now.

in my experience lower body (hamstring, groin) injuries are common, though players who are "plagued" with that type of injury over a multi year career is typically the result of steroid abuse. Blown knees are just a danger with the game, and sometimes bad turf, the rest look like standard wear and tear.
Re: What's with all the injuries?
Tbh, I think there's also the case that guys are so fit to start with, that there's very little 'give' in their bodies.
I think you can always expect that WRs and RBs are going to get hamstring/leg muscle injuries, due to how explosive they have become. The initial bursts, followed by cuts, are always going to put up a strain, and it probably doesn't take much to take someone 'over the edge', be it a slip, contact, or snagging a foot in the turf, when it's all happening at speed.
Years ago, while there would be some general fitness work, sportsmen used to prepare for their sports, by actually practising them all the time. Their bodies got used to what they were being asked to do, and their fitness, would often be 'fitness for purpose', rather than 'fitness everywhere'. 'Reps' weren't done just for the sake of it, they were being done so that guys bodies would get used to the positional demands of their game.
In the NFL, the CBA has taken that away, pretty much, so part of the emphasis about being 'ready' is on overall fitness.

Was just reading something on that. Idea is newer turf gives better traction, better traction means less give. Author supposes it's related to wearing the right cleats for the right surfaces...but less traction means worse performance if more give to avoid it. Anyway :

Re: What's with all the injuries?
I'm thinking it has something to do with the new CBA. Less practices and ability to get into game shape
Re: What's with all the injuries?
Does anyone have any historical injury data to show the injuries getting worse?
Re: What's with all the injuries?
Right, Illu, that would be interesting. You would also have to factor in if there is a reporting change with regard to the probable, doubtful category etc (see Brady's shoulder phantom injury).
Maybe actually not playing at all would be the best measure, although you would loose all the hamstring and makes you go at only 70% injuries.
Re: What's with all the injuries?
To quote Claude Rains in Battle of the Worlds, a role I am positive he would want back, PHYSICS!!!!!
Yeah turns out that 200-300 lb guys slamming into each other at full speed does damage to bodies that were never meant to experience said collisions of 200 to 300+ lb guys going after each other at full speed.
