Redskins Giving up on 2012 Season
Here is a real life example of a team giving up on a season which leads to tanking it... After their loss today Redskins are 3-6 putting them in a position where they will have to win out in order to make playoffs. They are trowing in the White Towel.
"Giving up on 2012" "Looking at 2013" or "throwing in the white towel" means not giving a **** about how many more games they Win, thus winning is no longer the goal but player evaluation which is another way to tank the last half of the season.
***For those of you who believe that coaches and players never quite and always try to win.... your wrong***

Prove it.
Re: Redskins Giving up on 2012 Season
This is why other leagues have draft lotteries. Shanahan is safe as head coach. No matter how this season ends he will not be fired. So what will he do? Player evaluation = playing rookies and second year players which will pile on the losses.
***This is what happens in other leagues as well when a team has no chance at a meaningful season, the players, coaches, etc pack it in which is exactly why they have draft lotteries.

No link. Speculation.
Thank you again Mike for the waste of bandwidth and also how even if you meant to implement the Bills should do the same, you didn't even mention it.
Moron, Spam zone please.

Re: Redskins Giving up on 2012 Season
They don't even have anything to gain by "giving up" anyway.
The Rams have their first round pick.
So what's the point in "giving up" from their perspective?

You are one of those nieve people that dont really know how life works...
This is the byproduct of your education and lack of knowledge of history and direct real world experience.
Presidents have been bought and sold!!! And you dont think an NFL team will not care about losing an extra game or two in an otherwise meaningless season. The naiveté is astounding.

People dont always give up because they something to gain. Usually people give up when they have nothing to gain which is the case here. Now imagine if they had something to gain by giving up! That much more incentive.
Re: Redskins Giving up on 2012 Season
you do know that the skins don't have a pick in round 1 next year right?

This doesn't even make any sense. This thread is horrible. And has no premise or point.
Evaluating your roster isn't giving up, it's evaluating the roster. Them tanking, purposefully, has no gain for them.
And if they are giving up...are they in collusion with the Rams organization to get St Louis a better draft pick?

READ THE ARTICLE!!!!
Mike Shanahan: "Washington Redskins looking to 2013"
"After being manhandled by the Panthers, Shanahan essentially has thrown in the towel on 2012."
WRITER POINTS OUT "It's a little alarming to hear this when the Redskins have seven games left in this season."
FLETCHER THEN SAYS IN REGARDS TO STARTING 3-6: "You see who really wants to play football." Implying that players GIVE UP when faced with a 3-6 start.
THE POINT IS THAT PLAYERS, COACHES, ETC... GIVE UP ON A SEASON WHEN THEY START SLOW EVEN WHEN THEY DONT HAVE SOMETHING TO GAIN.
NOW IMAGINE IF THEY HAD SOMETHING TO GAIN LIKE DRAFT PICS OR A TOP5 PIC OR A PLAYER LIKE LUCK!
CONTINUOUSLY JUST ABOUT EVERYONE ON THIS BOARD HAS SAID NO TEAM WOULD EVER GIVE UP, PLAYERS WOULD GIVE A 100% EVEN WHEN 3-6 TO SAVE THEIR JOBS....OBVIOUSLY THAT IS NOT THE CASE COACHES AND PLAYERS GIVE UP....
.....WINS ARE LEFT ON THE TABLE
Re: Redskins Giving up on 2012 Season
You read the article.
"Shanahan said the rest of the season will become an evaluation for next year, according to Rich Campbell of The Washington Times."
EVALUATING THE ROSTER IS NOT THROWING GAMES.

You obviously cant read between the lines.
What they are talking about here is simple:
They are not doing everything in their power to WIN. WINS are left on the Table. Some of the players are 'throwing in the white towel' as are the coaches.
What this means is that winning is no longer the goal! Instead of kicking the tying 22 yard FG they will go for it... Player evaluation = preseason!
They will be leaving WINS on the table.. ie not giving a 100%.
*And these are Their words: 'throwing in the towel' 'giving up on 2012' not mine! The Author of the piece finds this Alarming for a reason...
-----And you dont think a losing Team that has something to gain would ever do the same thing? Leave WINS on the table ala 2012 Colts??? Really lol---
Re: Redskins Giving up on 2012 Season
Lmao. Redskins first team to throw their season so another team can draft 1st overall with their pick.

Yes it does make sense. Lets say that you are a surgeon in France taking home $150,000 Euro/yr and after paying a 40% and working 15hrs/wk. Would you instead work 25hrs per week still take home $150,000 Euro/yr after paying much more in taxes?
Most people would be giving up those extra hours because they have nothing to gain. In the same way NFL players would not put in the extra time, effort, and risk injury
This thread is horrible. And has no premise or point.
Just because it goes against the grain does not mean its horrible. You guys are disappointed because of your high expectations. God forbid anyone ever expressed an opinion that goes against the grain and challenges your opinions....
Evaluating your roster isn't giving up, it's evaluating the roster.
Its giving up on winning. When a team says we are evaluating the rost for the rest of the season what do you think they are talking about???? They are saying, winning is no longer the Goal. They are saying that they will treat the rest of the season like a Preseason... thats what it means.
Them tanking, purposefully, has no gain for them.
Do teams lose games in the Preseason on Purpose??? Probably NOT but winning is irrelevant The goal is player evaluation and development. Winning is not the goal.
And if they are giving up...are they in collusion with the Rams organization to get St Louis a better draft pick?
Your reaching here... Like I stated before, most often giving up is a psychological response to extreem adversity. Generally, when human being know they dont have much of a choice for something better, when their opportunity is limited they give up. There does not need to be a benefit to giving up. Giving up is its own mental relief, its its own benefit.

Between Mitch and Mike, this forum has really turned into a sad place.

Read the article....
These are the Redskin players saying that some of their teammates 'will throw in the white towel'
Its the coach saying that they are playing for 2013...
I am pointing something very obvious out. Something that is so much of human nature and behaiour that fans want to pertend it does not exist. You think for some odd reason that NFL players play a 100% all of the time. They they dont take plays or games or seasons off. That somehow starting 3-6 doesnt make a difference. That coaches are allways trying to WIN....
***THE GREATEST COACH OF ALL TIME DID NOT CARE ABOUT WINNING!!!! ALL HE ASKED IS THAT HIS PLAYERS GIVE A 100% THATS ALL***
