For those keeping score at home, it has been 551 days since the puck last was dropped here in a meaningful game. More than 18 months since anything was at stake on the local downtown pond.

The Buffalo Sabres return to HSBC Arena in a new environment Wednesday night, and their game against the New York Islanders will be more than the opening night of a new season.
