A.J. Smith: Bring him back/would he come back?
http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-sh...7722--nfl.html
As noted above the Chargers are expected to let go of Smith and Turner at the end. Which of course brings up the debate, do the Bills try and get him back? Either as replacement for Nix or maybe in some other capacity like team president to over see Nix?
Thoughts?

Re: A.J. Smith: Bring him back/would he come back?
It will never ever happen.
Re: A.J. Smith: Bring him back/would he come back?
Can't imagine Doug Whaley would be real happy with that.
Re: A.J. Smith: Bring him back/would he come back?
Maybe as some sort of scout or something. He built and destroyed a good team in San Diego.
Re: A.J. Smith: Bring him back/would he come back?
No. Haven't you had enough of elderly retreads already?
Re: A.J. Smith: Bring him back/would he come back?
No thanks. He's better than Nix, but his poor decisions kept building until they left a formerly contending Chargers team in ruins.

Re: A.J. Smith: Bring him back/would he come back?
No he is horrible. Chargers fan are ready to burn him in effigy. I don't think Nix has been the problem here honestly. We have talent on both sides of the ball. Where he has failed is at the one position which matters most, QB. Put a solid, not spectacular, QB on this team and it makes up for a lot of flaws. Compared to the past few GMs I like what buddy has done. I'd be ok with Whaley as well if we did decide to part ways but I don't see that happening.
Re: A.J. Smith: Bring him back/would he come back?
No......why we have Nix and he has not done a bad job. Plus like another poster said we have Whaley.

Well, A.J. Smith did destroy a good team in San Diego. I think John Butler & Buddy Nix had MUCH MORE to do with the building of that good team.

Anyone that wants to criticize Nix should go on a Chargers board & take a good hard look at what a terrible GM (Smith) really looks like.

Oh yeah? Buddy has built decent lines right now. When the quarterback is ready will the lines still be solid then? Buddy is ****ing idiot.
Re: A.J. Smith: Bring him back/would he come back?
Smith found Flutie and I will always give he credit for that.
Re: A.J. Smith: Bring him back/would he come back?
smith's ego is the problem.
1. he doesn't want a strong head coach. he wants the glory for himself. that's why he chased marty out. granted marty can never win the big game, but he at least got you theer.
2. he doesn't get along with the players when it comes to contracts and has a bettman like attitude. "they don't come for you. they come for the jersey." as a result, he jettison's anyone who dissents. it's a business. people perform. people want payment. you negotiate. Smith doesn't.
So what would the bills get? a new GM who still wouldn't find a good coach and potentially won't get along with him? his ego isn't going to take a demotion behind a guy who worked for him. and if he does, i can't imagine that he won't rattle his swords to do what is best for AJ and not necessarily best for the team.
and yes, he's been part of a number of good scouting from the 90's until now. but his attitude has held him back from greater success.
Re: A.J. Smith: Bring him back/would he come back?
That's a really tough one.
There is NO DOUBT that A.J. Smith did an excellent job building the Chargers into a Super Bowl contender. Anybody who says otherwise is ridiculous.
Think about all the talent he's added over the last ten years.
Phillip Rivers, Michael Turner, Darren Sproles, Vincent Jackson, Antonio Gates, Marcus McNeil, Shawne Merriman, Shaun Phillips, Antonio Cromartie, Eric Weddle.
On the other hand, one of the main reasons that the Chargers were never able to take that next step was because of Smith and his stupid decisions.
What moron fires his coach (Schottenheimer) after a 14-2 season? And then replaces him with Norv Turner?
He also deserves much of the blame for failing to see Tomlinson's inevitable decline - and letting Michael Turner and Darren Sproles walk in free agency.
Smith also has a tendency to let his ego get in the way of his better judgement. That's a major reason players like Vincent Jackson and Cromartie aren't on the team anymore.

Well, I disagree. As I said Butler & Nix had more to do with building the Chargers than Smith. Since Nix left, the Chargers draft has been terrible.
Think about the talent Smith let get away with no return in the last 10 years.
Marty Schottenheimer, Drew Brees, Michael Turner, Darren Sproles, Vincent Jackson.
Smith gave up a 2nd rnd pick, TWO 3rd rnd picks & a 5th rnd pick to draft Eric Weddle. Was he worth all that? Ans: Hell NO.

How much of that should be credited to NIx when he was with the chargers? :idunno:
How have the chargers done since Nix left? :idunno:
