This is getting juicy.
The coyotes are bidding on land that will take place in late June. The NHL wants to wait for that bid before relocation. However. If it doesn't go through, a move would be rushed. What's emerging is this: the yotes are bought for 1.3 BILLION. 1 Bill goes to owner, 300 mil is split among the teams. The Yotes move to Utah and the NHL, depending on the he land sale, gives current yotes ownership an expansion team once an arena is finalized and built.
Apparently even the players were notified of such a possibility. It's all very fluid, so we will see

The thought is the NHL is strongarming the yotes to moving, while refusing to abandon the Arizona market. This is somewhat of a best case scenario, because the NHL absolutely does not want to spend three more years (minimum) at Mullett arena. so the NHL will get its relocation fees. It's expansion fees, Phoenix market, an additional expansion fee and market (likely Atlanta) AND likely an expanded playoff format (I think the NHL will adopt a play-in round like the NBA

I don’t know why the NHL insists on forcing a team on Arizona. It’s just not a strong hockey market.

The latest from Sportsnet/HNIC's Elliotte Friedman...

Yotes GM flew to Calgary to address the team directly. Sounds like an official sale and relocation will be announced on the 18th

The Utah Yotes.
Sounds about right.

From what I've seen, the current owner of the Coyotes is keeping the rights to get an NHL expansion team in the Phoenix area IF he can get a new arena built. The catch is, if he does he has to repay the amount he's selling the Yotes for....$1 billion. (Cue the Dr. Evil finger point and music sting.)

He has 5 years to build a new arena

Arizona = "This has to be the worst place on the continent for an NHL hockey team".
Utah = "Hold my beer...".

That's 3.2% beer, pal.
The Utah jazz has the most impassioned fan base in the NBA. Forums regularly see 1,000 plus pages for a single draft thread. If it translates to pro hockey that's not a bad thing.
So, think of all the Mormons that would visit this site.

Arizona has a franchise in the most popular and successful professional sports league on the continent, that doesn't translate to hockey any more than an NBA fan base will.

Kudos for hanging on to the pro game. I bailed when Jordan ruined the league.

I did bail on the Sabres around 1990 when I moved to Utah. Obviously the coverage back then wasn't accessible like it is now. The NBA was the only big 4 game in town, so following them wasn't a hard decision. Stockton, Malone, Jerry Sloan, Larry H Miller (owner), and the small market team were easy to root for. The fan base keeps me going back. Many play or have played the game (I do not) so the knowledge and passion is there.
We'll see what the market here is for hockey. They've had a minor league team for a few decades (the Grizzlies) and a brand new NHL sized rink is being buit just outside of Par City. It will be the future home of the Utah Outliers, an elite U-20 junior hockey team.
We're about to be announced as the host for the '34 winter Olympics. I'm sure the Yotes will get residual buzz from that.
And the new owner is a young tech guy, also owns the Jazz, surely is enticing to the league. Local. He's no dummy. I'm sure there will be butts in the seats.

Again, IF he wins the auction for the land needed. As Cody Rhodes once put it, "That is a very big IF."
