Would you have traded Wildgoose + 5th for Ertz today?
The Cardinals did just that, trading a 6th rd rook and a '22 5th for him.
Even with the emergence of Knox, I would've taken that trade. A fine mentor for him and you never know with injuries.
I'd bet BFO talked about it and turned it down—they've proven to be smarter than me before.

No. Ertz on downside of career.

Knox needs to play not be "mentored". And at this moment Knox is the better player

90 days ago Yes. Not today.

Re: Would you have traded Wildgoose + 5th for Ertz today?
No I would have traded Ertz for that very deal.
We need the CB and the Draft capital.
-
Re: Would you have traded Wildgoose + 5th for Ertz today?
Nope.
Ertz was worth maybe a 5th round pick.....before the season started.
Now, with Knox showing exactly what he is capable of, Ertz is not worth anything to the Bills.
Especially when you look at the contracts.
Ertz has a cap number (for Philly) of $12 million. His 2022 and 2023 years of his present contract have been voided.
He is expected to renegotiate a new contract with Arizona, and his asking price is going to be quite high.
Dawson Knox's cap number for 2021 is $1 million and his 2022 cap number is $1.2 million, since he's still on his rookie contract. If Knox continues his performance he will probably be extended after this season.
The excitement for a possible trade to get Ertz was in the off season.....and was smart to consider at that time, because it was an obvious upgrade from what we had been getting from Knox his first two years.
And Ertz (at least to me) was worth considering for this year's Super Bowl run, because he already has shown he is a big time, impact player.
As is well known, "N.F.L." stand for "Not For Long".
In just five games, Dawson Knox has become the TE with the most TD catches, and has had more long completions than any other TE. Of course, he has THE QB who is playing lights out with the long pass.
In March, 2021, the reported price to trade for Ertz was a 3rd to 4th round pick. As I opined at the time, combined with his contract, "that's lots of baggage for a 30 year old TE".
Arizona had their #1 TE out for the year, and it motivated them to pay what they did.
I suspect that the Bills braintrust considered trading for Ertz....if the price was right....during the off season.....but ALSO had high hopes for Knox to progress.
Their patience paid off.....and the off season talk could have lit a little fire under Dawson's butt.

Re: Would you have traded Wildgoose + 5th for Ertz today?
Knox has broke out, Ertz wasn’t needed anymore. We didn’t know this months ago, so any earlier calls about it was speculative.

Re: Would you have traded Wildgoose + 5th for Ertz today?
Ertz: 18 rec 189 yds 10.5 avg long of 28 2 TDs - 8.5M salary
Knox: 18 rec 261 yds 14.5 avg long of 53 5 TDs - 850k salary
no brainer at this point.

Re: Would you have traded Wildgoose + 5th for Ertz today?
Depends if we play Arizona in the Super Bowl and Ertz catches the game winning touchdown.
-
Re: Would you have traded Wildgoose + 5th for Ertz today?
I was never much into getting Ertz but for all the wrong reasons. I just assumed this was an offense that doesn't need or want a TE as an offensive weapon. I was quite wrong about that part. And Knox is younger, much cheaper (for now) and coming in to his own. So no! I wouldn't have, but only because i was wrong about how much this offense was going to utilize the TE position this year.

No. I'm good with what the Bills have on hand.

Re: Would you have traded Wildgoose + 5th for Ertz today?
You can't trade a practice squad player.
And who from the regular roster are you going to cut to make room for Ertz?
So...no.
-
Re: Would you have traded Wildgoose + 5th for Ertz today?
No and not because I wouldn't want to give up Wildgoose and the pick. Ertz wasn't needed with the emergence of Knox. We already have Beasley and Davis who aren't getting targets they're used to.

Didn't seem Ertz was needed in Arizona either. They seemed to be doing ok without him too.

They lost Maxx Williams (their only TE with any catches this season) for the year this past Sunday.

They did have the need to deal.
We absolutely did not.

They had no other tight ends on their roster?

Maybe the equivalent of Sweeney and Gilliam, so basically...not really.

That's with one less game played by Knox.

Good to see you have changed you mind from earlier this year.

Great, now we have people who think Dawson Knox is better than Zach Ertz.
smh

Yeah look at the difference at who the QB is.
Ertz has the same amount of catches while having a guy behind center who is a few levels below Josh Allen.
-
Re: Would you have traded Wildgoose + 5th for Ertz today?
Nope. I like Knox. Sweeney hasn't done anything yet, but I want to give him a little more time. I think he has some upside. He needs time and opportunity.

How great would that be to have two productive TE's!!!

Would you then dump Knox? The Bills seem like they only wanted 1 pass catching TE as they cut Hollister.

I'm not saying to dump him.
Ertz would be an upgrade on him though.

Short to intermediate I am there with you. I don't think he has the wheels like Knox on the deeper stuff

We shall see starting next week when he has a real QB throwing him the ball.

I would have traded Wildgoose for a bottle of Wild Turkey.

the season is early. Knox might end up stinking when teams clamp down on him.

Maybe...and just maybe for a year.
Knox is looking like one of the foundations of a long term Bills offensive juggernaut....and still has room to progress.
Ertz is at the end of his career with only degradation to look forward to.
The "upgrade" would be minor at best and very transitory.
-
Re: Would you have traded Wildgoose + 5th for Ertz today?
I'm not even saying Ertz would be an upgrade. He'd be a top-5 TE2, a capable fill-in for injury, and help Knox get even better.
Seems worth a 5th rd'er to me, but BFO knows more than me.

$$$$$$$$$$$ kept us away.
What message are you sending ..... is something else to consider.
They got a player and a draft pick for him .... too much for my blood.
