You just don't kick deep and it's over ................ force them to return the kick!!!!
You almost had to try and do it to give up a FG with 13 seconds left. McD did everything wrong after we took the lead. And don't blame the special teams coach. The HC has to go to him and tell him to squib kick it.
Only thing I'll say about squibbing it...say for whatever reason it's not a great kick...one of the up backs for the Chiefs could grab it and just kneel down immediately.
Which then doesn't change the situation in any fashion.
And, let us not forget the pooch kick for the music city miracle in a similar situation.
Just squibbing it or pooching it doesn't guarantee a victory there.

I thought about big return possibility. But weighing what your defense is doing vs special teams at the time, I'd go with the special team approach. The key is to limit their play to 2 from their 25 - 30 yard line.
Then on defense, They should just put 3 or even 2 DT/DE to make sure Mahomes does not run straight without any resistance - note I didn't say rush, more of a contain. Now you have 8 or 9 defenders in the back, double the main targets. You know Mahomes HAVE to get the ball out quick. No need to guard the sideline.
McDermott and Co. pride themselves as detail - oriented staff. This one is completely on him and the coaching staff. The D was gassed, the Chiefs D was too. But what you are looking for defending the last couple of plays is not difficult if you have team prepared and they know what to do. Judging from what I saw last night, they were not much better than What Dallas showed in the last few seconds.
Rush Oliver and Phillips, keep a spy on Mahomes. Use the other 8 guys to double cover everyone. Play the receivers from the line. Give Mahomes all day to throw to no one. Time runs out.Quote:

If they decide to run it out, it could have run 4, maybe 5 seconds off the clock. The high kick and the Bills very good special teams could have made sure that the return would have the Chiefs at the 20...maybe the 25....but with time for only ONE play, not two.
And then when the Chiefs did have the ball with 13 seconds (could have been only 7 or 8) going into a prevent shell was moronic. The Chiefs saw what they were going to do....Kelsey and Hill knew they were not going to be impeded at the line at all (and they weren’t).....and the Bills basically let them run free underneath a deep zone.
Terrible, terrible coaching.
This game should have never gone into OT.
Squib kick would've been pointless, as they would've just knelt down, probably at the 25 or maybe even closer, running no time off. Notacon is right, the kick should've been just short of the goal line, forcing them to run it, which would've burned enough time to leave Mahomes only time for 1 pass, not 2 plus a FG.
That being said, they still ran a stupid defense with 13 seconds left
Kickoffs are unpredictable, weird stuff happens. With 13 seconds left I think it's defensible to put your defense on the field in the more controlled environment of a regular play. In theory it's a more predictable situation, and with 13 seconds probably seemed safer. I personally, with the benefit of hindsight, wished they squibbed it. But that decision was not the part that bothered me from a coaching perspective. It was what came after.Quote:

And to be honest, with what they did, 5 yards wouldn't have made a difference...with that kick on the field goal even 10 wouldn't have.
McDermott wouldn’t say anything other than execution and “it’s on me” tells me he was frustrated with Frazier and what he communicated to the defense in the last 13 seconds…
There’s going to be changes in some form. Maybe McDermott pays more attention to defensive play calling going forward.
