Bills lead the NFL in guaranteed money so far
So the Bills go from "Ralph is cheap" to the Dan Snyder model of "throw money at it?"
Quote:
Thanks to their aggressive approach to the offseason, during which they spent a reported NFL-leading $91.5 million in guaranteed money, the Bills have put themselves in position where the draft is much more about selecting the best available players than targeting positions.

Did Whaley learn from drafting EJ Manuel or what:
Quote:
“When you have a distinct need, guys look a lot better and you tend to over-grade them and you have a bigger propensity to miss,” Whaley said. “Because you say, ‘Oh, this guy’s great because we need him.’
LOL

The "Ralph is Cheap" method hasn't produced so much as a playoff berth in the past 15 years...
Will this method work? Who knows. I, for one, am happy that they are at least trying something different.
Since the Pegulas took ownership of the Bills, I have yet to hear them refer to the Bills as a "small market" team, nor have I heard Ralph Wilson terms like "Cash To The Cap" used.
Sure, it could all produce the same result in the end, but at least the Pegulas are going down swinging if it does.

i hate how whaley is completely blamed for drafting EJ Manuel.
two things
1) technically he was not GM at that time
2) even if you buy that point number 1 is B.S (which i understand) he would not have been in the position to draft a crappy QB in a crappy draft class had Nix not avoided the situation for years before. In some ways, his hands were tied in my opinion.
not saying he's perfect. the price for sammy was way to steep amongst other things.

A packed house and plenty of changes should make this an entertaining year to watch Bills football.

I really don't think it's as damning as others do either. Show me a GM that didn't whiff on a QB, and I'll show you one that either A)never drafted one, or B)wasn't a GM for too long.

It surely was Buddy Nix that squarely put the team in the position they found themselves in in the 2013 draft for what he failed to do for the team in years prior (at the QB position). They thought that by giving Fitzpatrick that big contract that he was suddenly going to be a good QB???

John Kryk of the Toronto Sun said their are about 3 Million people that live between Buffalo & Toronto.
That is BETWEEN Buffalo & Toronto, not including Buffalo & Toronto.
Kryk said that number of 3 Million people would be more than the number of people of HALF of the NFL teams markets.
And those three Million people are Canadians, not including all the people in America in the Buffalo market.
The people of the suburbs of Buffalo, & Rochester & its suburbs, Central NY, North West Pa.
It is a FALLACY that Buffalo is a small market team.
Re: Bills lead the NFL in guaranteed money so far
If I were an older vet still with some gas in my tank and wrangled a new contract - with this guaranteed $ up front - see ya ! the season after...
Re: Bills lead the NFL in guaranteed money so far
I understand to a point what the Bills did this past FA. They had to overpay for Clay in order to make it so the phins would not match. Now that being said in order to run Roman's offense they had to get some more pieces to be able to run what he wants. As a result I hope they do not spend big next year except to sign our own. I also like what Whaley said about the draft and developing players and not rushing them to play right away (steelers model). Hopefully, we will be built for annual success not a flash in the pan.

It was totally idiot Buddy Nix's fault. Why would the moron wait to get a qb last? **** building the lines first. If you have a qb you know you want, draft him and let him sit until the lines are built.

Well. I never did actually say he built the lines. He was quoted as saying first you build within the trenches then you get yourself a quarterback.

I'm not the one that continuously said it was a small market team... The former owner did.

As did the NFL.
It was a myth, a fallacy that the Buffalo market is small.
I think that fallacy was perpetrated in case the Bills moved, it could be said the market was too small to support the team...which is not true.

"small market" is NFL owner euphemism for "revenue sharing recipient." Buffalo may have a higher population in the region but they lack big companies that buy luxury boxes and spend a gazillion dollars advertising.
That being said, Canada is not the same as the U.S. While the Bills get a lot of support from the north, Canadians are far less likely than Americans to care about the NFL. And if they do care, they don't necessarily feel enough of a connection to WNY to like the Bills.

Well, over 20% of fans in the Ralph come from North of the border.
I used to spend summers between Buffalo & London Ont.
The Buffalo TV stations are on cable up there, the NFL has a following up there.
