NFL lays out steppingstone for players who want to coach

An NFL program designed to give former and current players an opportunity to break into coaching begins next week with the opening of NFL Europe training camp in Tampa. The new internships, granted to six active players and 12 retirees, will offer "a taste of the coaching experience," NFL Europe managing director John Beake says.

The active players will work with the six NFL Europe clubs for about a month, beginning Monday. Among them: Denver Broncos defensive tackle Chester McGlockton, Chicago Bears special-teams standout Larry Whigham and Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Mike Maslowski. Six of the ex-players will continue on to Europe for the 10-game season and then join NFL clubs during training camp as part of the league's minority coaching fellowship.
