This seems not only fair, but logical

NEW YORK - A new plan for layoffs at Circuit City is openly targeting better-paid workers, risking a public backlash by implying that its wages are as subject to discounts as its flat-screen TVs.

The electronics retailer, facing larger competitors and falling sales, said Wednesday that it would lay off about 3,400 store workers_ immediately — and replace them with lower-paid new hires as soon as possible.

The laid-off workers, about 8 percent of the company's total work force, would get a severance package and a chance to reapply for their former jobs, at lower pay, after a 10-week delay, the company said.

What? There is a problem with this? Welcome to the world of Conservatives. Fire people for no reason so that they can save money.

I recently remember someone posting that unions have outlived their usefulness and that companies can't do the things to their employees that they used to because of all the labor laws. Capitalistic greed at its finest!

As if the job of the companies is to give money to workers...
"'Clean up your room.', 'Stand up straight.', 'Pick up your feet.', 'Take it like a man.', 'Be nice to your sister.', 'Don't mix beer and wine, ever.'. Oh yeah, 'Don't drive on the railroad track.'"

"Eh, Phil. That's one I happen to agree with."

Your point appears to be that workers are getting screwed over, and that a union should exist to help them. Also that companies are horrible because they are doing something to increase their profits.

My point is that companies exist to make money and increase profits. There's nothing horrible about that. Why should they not limit (or reduce) the wages they pay employees? After all, their purpose is not to give employees more money than they have to.

Re: This seems not only fair, but logical

this **** has been going on for years. When I was in high school, I was working at Wegmans and I worked my way all the way up to $5.25 an hour. Well, they hired a new crop of cashiers at $4.35 an hour, and all the people who got hired with me stopped getting hours while all the new hires had all the hours they could handle.

I went to the front end manager and said "I know you're trying to save money by scheduling people who make less, but I really need more hours." His face got all red and he said "we don't take salary into account when making the schedule". I looked down the row of registers- 15 of them were open- there were 2 overnight cashiers and everyone else had been there less than 3 months.

How do I withdraw my applications to Circuit City and Wegmans? I'll be damned if I'm getting bent over for the Man.

I'm completely at a loss. Are you even a human being?

Why? Because I believe Circuit City has the right to limit the wages they pay their employees?

That's why Wegmans continues to hire new 15, 16 and 17 year olds several times throughout the year. They can pay them a lot less than the employees who have been there a while.

yeah....and then you turn around to see them as one of the best companies to work for when they pull suckhead plays like this.it was the same crap when i worked for Stations Casino.they piss in your ear and tell you that it's raining.it's apparent that these jackoffs who nominate these companies of their rankings don't dig deeper and ask people in the lower end of the pecking order what THEY think.

Mikey is usually one of those singing their praises...

I can say this, for all it's other faults, Wal*Mart does treat it's tenured people quite well for the most part.
