Rate the replacements: Ready to fill big holes? Most NFL coaches and front-office personnel are bunkered this week in draft meetings, trying to rate players but, more important, trying to gauge how those players will help their teams. Replace Nate Clements? One of the league's best cover corners? Not easy, Bills. (Getty Images) For the teams that lost key players in free-agency, the draft is even more critical because they have to fill important spots. Some of those voids will be filled with players already on the team's roster. Others will be filled through the draft. To help you get a better idea of what some of those teams are dealing with heading into 2007, we look at how teams might fill the loss of some of the key free agents who moved this year. We call it rating the replacements. Buffalo Bills Player who left: Cornerback Nate Clements (49ers) Replacement player(s): Kiwaukee Thomas and Ashton Youboty. The skinny: Losing Clements is a big blow to the Bills defense. He was an outstanding cover corner, and those are tough to replace. Thomas, a seventh-year player, won the job as the team's nickel back last season and played well. Coach Dick Jauron knows him from when he was his defensive coordinator with the Jaguars. Second-year player Youboty, the team's third-round pick last season, has more skills than Thomas, but he is raw and barely played in 2006. Still, if you use a high pick on a corner, it's usually a sign that the job is his. Rate the replacement: Questionable at best. Losing Clements is a stinger. Youboty has to come through to make this move OK. Washington Redskins Player who left: Guard Derrick Dockery (Bills) Replacement player(s): Ross Tucker, Mike Pucillo, Jason Fabini, Todd Wade Losing Derrick Dockery won't kill the 'Skins: Hey, he's a guard. (Getty Images) The skinny: Dockery played well for the Redskins last season and seemed to be on the verge of being a Pro Bowl player. But he isn't worth what the Bills paid to get him. None of the four players trying to replace him are as good as Dockery, but one of them will be good enough to get by. Fabini and Wade are tackles who will try to make the move to guard. The favorite is probably Pucillo. Rate the replacement: OK. They'll get by with whoever starts there. Hey, it's a guard, not a tackle [/size][/font]

Funny wasnt Mike Pucillo a Bills cast off ........listen that contract is back loaded for Dockery and we need to run the ball to ease JP lossmans game and to keep our allstar vaulted defense off the field and to run in december...it is that simple...clement will be interesting if the 49 million or whatever clement got will outwiegh the guy we put there....I say we will be fine if we get some more production from the DT's as it should be in this defense. Whether or not the guys we have step up or is it K Jenkins or a high draft pick I dont care....all the db's will sink or swim on the play of the DL's pressure.....

Baltimore Ravens Player who left: Linebacker Adalius Thomas (Patriots) Replacement player: Jarret Johnson The skinny: Thomas was a versatile player who could do so many things for Rex Ryan's defense. His loss will be felt. But he turns 30 this year, so signing him to a long-term deal was risky. The Ravens chose to re-sign Johnson, who is younger. At 6-3, 270 pounds, he has played outside linebacker and defensive end, much like Thomas. He led all Ravens backups in tackles last season. Rate the replacement: Good. Johnson is an underrated player who will step in and play well. As likely the only new starter on defense, it will make for a smooth transition. Atlanta Falcons Player that left: Defensive end Patrick Kerney (Seahawks) Replacement player: Chauncey Davis The skinny: Losing Kerney hurts. He is an effort player who can create problems off the edge. He missed time last season, which forced young players like Davis and Paul Carrington to get time at end. Davis has some speed, but he isn't in the same league with Kerney. He does play the run pretty well. The loss of Kerney will put even more pressure on John Abraham to stay healthy. Rate the replacement: Not good. Look for the Falcons to do something in the draft at defensive end. This is the most important part of the post. Dockery is just a G, not exactly a tough position to fill. The Bills just spent way too much money on him and he's not going to play aswell in Buffalo simply because the talent around him isn't nearly as good as it was in Washington. It's been said over and over that Dockery was the least talented player on Washington Oline, if Dockery is a big improvement to the Bills Oline whats that tell you about the rest of the talent there? He sure doesn't have Clinton Portis running behind him in Buffalo.

This is the most important part of the post. Dockery is just a G, not exactly a tough position to fill. The Bills just spent way too much money on him and he's not going to play aswell in Buffalo simply because the talent around him isn't nearly as good as it was in Washington. WHo cares who was best the fins line sucked then it will suck this year. Only know they have a qb with a broken knee, potentially a QB whose like 50 and Cleo lemon.

We did overpay for Dockery. And SF overpaid for Clements, and Minnesota overpaid for Hutch.....

If you compare Hutch's deal now with Dockery and Steinbach....the Vikings got a steal!

One more time. Dockery was the best available Guard in FA. How much did we overpay by? When someone can realistically quantify the number based on the new CBA than I'll listen.

The only thing I see is that we got the best avaiable guard and filled a giant hole. Good job Bills.

Nobdy was twisting the Bills arm to sign him! They didn't have to pay that much for a guard, they could have improved the line ...especially through the draft at the Gaurd position and spent way less money and gotten a compareable talent. Bill fans seem to think every other position on the team will be upgraded through this years draft, why not Gaurd?? Dockery was not so good that you had to have him and overpay for him at that.

Good post! Plus he's young too and will make Peters EVEN better. So basically, the blind side of JP is now protected! And we can pull a San Diego and run, run, run all over that left side.
