The Buffalo Bills were looking to upgrade their blocking tight end position before Sunday's opener following the release of Matt Murphy. The club feels that need has been effectively filled with the signing of Michael Gaines
Monday.
The fourth-year tight end has spent his entire career with the Carolina Panthers after they made him a seventh-round draft pick in 2004. But Gaines was put on injured reserve last Saturday when the club signed free agent safety Marquand Manuel and cornerback Dante Wesley. Gaines, however, opted for an injury settlement so he would have the opportunity to play for another team.
Gaines is healthy and able to play right away. He passed Buffalo's physical and performed well in a workout.
