Linebacker Brown returns to Patriots -- again

Still seeking to improve their depth and experience, even after a dominating season-opening victory, the New England Patriots have re-signed veteran linebacker Chad Brown, whom they released two weeks ago in the cutdown to the 53-player roster.

To create a roster spot, the Pats waived rookie linebacker David Herron, who had been claimed on waivers from the Minnesota Vikings.

Financial terms of the one-year contract were not disclosed, but it is believed that Brown got a one-year contract which included the minimum base salary of $820,000, and which will be prorated over the balance of the season. Because the Patriots waited until after the season opener to re-sign Brown, the base salary is not fully guaranteed.

This essentially marks Brown's third tour of duty in New England. He played in New England in 2005, then signed with the Pats this summer just before camp began. Although he is a shadow of what he used to be as a playmaker, the Patriots' coaches clearly like having him around.
Brown, 37, played eight games in 2006 for the Pittsburgh Steelers, the franchise with which he began his NFL career, and posted only seven tackles and one sack. In recent seasons, including 2006, Brown has been plagued by injuries.
