NFL Europe proceeds with strong consensus

PHOENIX (March 24, 2003) -- In the end, it came down to a decision that was larger than football or sports in general.

It came down to a decision that would be scrutinized by every other American business with dealings in Europe and, perhaps, the rest of the world.

And what NFL owners decided as their annual meeting began Monday was, despite war in Iraq and resulting tensions internationally, they would go forth with the NFL Europe season beginning play April 4-5 as scheduled.

They did not reach the conclusion filled with reservation or doubt.

"There was a very strong consensus to go forward and play this season," Commissioner Paul Tagliabue said. "The feeling was that we're an American business doing business in Europe, albeit a sports business. But like so many other American businesses in Europe, we need to go ahead and continue to operate."
