Bengals Refuse To Run Up Score Against Steelers

CINCINNATI--Faced with the opportunity to score a touchdown from inside the Steelers’ two yard line with time winding down in the first half, the Cincinnati Bengals opted to kick a field goal instead of running up the score. The classy move brought their deficit down to eight points.
“We could have gone for it, of course, but we thought the best course of action would be to kick a field goal,” said coach Marvin Lewis. “It’s just a matter of doing the right thing and respecting the game of football. A lot of other teams in the league would have gone for the jugular there and tried to run up the score to ten, but that’s not what we’re about. Of course now we’re getting criticized for not being aggressive enough. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t, I guess.” Afterward, Steelers players lauded the Bengals for being “classy” and said they represented all that is right with the National Football League.
