Now, with the postseason out of the picture, it would be in the Bills' best interest to cut Fairchild loose and let him begin his dream job at Colorado State. Why, you ask? Because it is a concrete fact that Buffalo will need a new offensive coordinator entering next season, so going forward with Fairchild for the remainder of this year would be counterproductive.
The next two weeks present a perfect opportunity for Jauron to hand the play-calling reins to either quarterbacks coach Turk Schonert, who has been a positive influence on highly impressive rookie signal-caller Trent Edwards, or longtime backup QB Alex Van Pelt, a 10-year Bill who has been an offensive assistant in Buffalo for two seasons.
If Jauron's hypothetical choice -- whether it is Schonert or Van Pelt -- shows promise over the next two weeks, he could name that assistant the permanent coordinator and not have to worry about it during the offseason.
On the other hand, if the Bills' interim coordinator were to perform as poorly over the next two weeks as Fairchild has this season, Jauron could look outside the organization and perhaps bring in an established play-caller with a slightly different offensive philosophy.
I couldn't agree more...Give Turk or Alex a little OJT before the season ends and see how the test drive goes.
