Lions Bidding Against Air For Rainer

Several NFL personnel execs have expressed to us dismay at the decision of the Detroit Lions to fork over a two-year, $1.83 million contract to linebacker Wali Rainer.

No one else was offering that kind of money. Per our sources, the Lions were bidding only against themselves for the rights to Rainer.

The addition of Rainer likely enables the Lions to slide Barrett Green back to the weak side. The Lions have toyed with the notion of putting Green in the middle, as the replacement for departed 2002 starter Chris Claiborne. Rainer now will likely man the middle linebacker position.
