Smith will follow the late Butler as Chargers GM

A.J. Smith has been promoted to general manager of the San Diego Chargers, succeeding the late John Butler, The Associated Press has learned.

Smith will be introduced at a news conference Tuesday afternoon, said a team source, speaking on condition he not be identified.

The move is not a surprise, considering that Smith had been Butler's right-hand man with both the Chargers and the Buffalo Bills. The two worked together for 21 seasons, with three organizations.

Butler, 56, died of cancer on April 11.
