Lions select target for Harrington with Rogers

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (April 26, 2003 5:08 p.m. EDT) - The Detroit Lions now have a receiver who can scare defenses and help quarterback Joey Harrington develop.

The Lions selected former Michigan State star Charles Rogers with the second overall pick in the NFL draft Saturday.

"All the great teams have at least one guy, that when he walks on the field, you go, 'We've got to put up with him,'" said Lions chief executive Matt Millen, who won four Super Bowl rings as an NFL linebacker. "That's what we hope Charles Rogers can do."

Detroit has been without an offensive player capable of making a big play since Barry Sanders retired just before the 1999 season.

"What we have is a guy that other teams have to account for," Millen said. "We did not have that."
